Awesome stuff. And yes, your can use 0w30 no problem. The "0" means it can be used in colder climates and I use it year round.

AWESOME OIL!

Thanks.

In another thread I mentioned changing to the above ct syn oil shortly after buying s10 in 2000 and noticed the oil burning and leakage reduced cinsiderably to almost none. Someone responded saying it was the syn oil's fresh esters (i dunno what they are) that resealed the valve quides that helped a lot.

Early december 2004 i went to quick change oil place due to limited time and unexpected -30 temps. Oil level before that still was not dropping much. The only synthetic they had was the esso 0w30 full synthetic. I knew my oil dipstick tube brace was not secured and that the tube moved back and forth an inch or 2 at top. I had been told yrs before don't worry about it. Oil level barely dropped with previous synthetic in so i didn't worry about it. When I went to check oil level end of January, when i pulled dipstick the tube came up with it. It was broke off right at block hole. Holding it in place i checked oil level and it was not even on stick. I had to put 3 lts of the 6 it holds, in to get level back up an inch above the full mark as various mechanics has suggested yrs before. I asked at garage what they suggested since when i tried on wrecker's same model to pull out another tube it won't budge. So i figured no way i'll get my broken end out with nothign to grab on to and no easy out screw in kit. Garage said for the cost in labor, just leave it as I now had it, which was i cut narrow v on tube end and vice gripped it smaller to fit in block side broken tube, then secured uuper tube to hold in place with inward pressure. He said the 3 lt oil loss in 6 weeks was not likely the tube hole , but instead the rear crank bearing oil seal which he said often went early in these engines. Hence my warnings yrs earlier to keep oil level lt higher. He suggested the 0w30 was thinner then what i had good retention with before so it likely leaking more where ever the leaks are. He said add the engine stop leak and just keep topping of oil as needed, checking weekly. It's been 2 weeks and can tire formula 1 gold 5w30 synthetic is still inch above full mark where i put it.

Do you agree with him ?
Is it the thicker 5w30 synthetic making the differance ?...
The Formula 1 engine stop leak ? (claims to refresh seals, is thin, not like the thick Wynns engine stop leak i used successfully in front diff leak).
...perhaps combination of both ?

Moved to the appropraite forum. Please post your blazer questions in the blazer forum.

1.) The oil is not the cause of your oil loss, the broken tube is. Get it fixed ASAP. Don't start throwing in stop leak crap into your engine and fix the problem properly and don't be cheap.

2.) The 4.3L holds 4.5L of oil, not 6l.

3.) Get a new mechanic, this guy sounds like a blistering moron. Why that dipshit was saying to put in stop leak to stop a leak caused by a broken dipshit tube is beyond me.

4.) Esso 0w30 synthetic is actually thicker at operating temperature than the CT 5w30 synthetic.

You really need to go get a new mechanic. This guy you have is the problem in this equation.

And where did you find this 6L figure for oil capacity?

Thanks for move to proper forum. I thought "Blazer"=full size, and "s-10" my smaller size including pickups ? just different body ?

1 - any easy cheap suggestions on how ? it's down behind oil filter on lower left side... even with filter off i have prob of less then millimeter sticking up ... can't remove pan easily to tap it out becasue of front 4wd componets ... maybe some kind of screw in puller device ?

2 - this 2.8 takes likely about 5 lt with filter change, but to get to hand scratched mark on dipstick (there when i bought it) which many mechanics have told me is good idea to extend life of rear main oil seal due to problem with these engines getting enough oil there, adds 1 more lt.

3 - maybe you right. he says he just trying to save me lot of unnecessary high cost which makes me tend to trust him for not wanting hundreds more cash from me ... i go there about once/yr so sort of a vip customer who asks lots of questions to learn stuff.

4 - thanks for info. i'll keep eye on things and decide in time with what i see. so far no or very little oil loss ... when down again maybe i'll try your 0w30 to no for sure if it drops faster.

I thought you said you were using the Esso 0w30 now?

that was put in by quick oil change place in dec. when i discovered 1/2 oil level and broken dip-tube in late jan i used big jug of 5w30 can tire formula 1 full syn oil from back of s10 blazer to top it off before going anywere. i try to keep backup fluids, hoses, belts for everything in back so not stranded if problem occurs. and portable rechargable 700 amp battery booster as well as a charger ;-) one can't afford getting stranded somewhere here in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with -30c temps not uncommon ;-)

Don't worry, I know that.

Sudbury ain't to warm right now either.

But seriously, get the tube fixed properly.
