New POS daily driver

Sold this car to a friend about a year and a half ago. It was a chassis my brother bought, Chads old FWD longblock, and a lot of love. He took it and modded it even further. Now he decided to get back to the V8s and newer cars I guess, so it came up for sale one night at work. It was an offer I couldn't refuse. Needs to be tuned in a bad way, probably has some boost leaks and such too. Nice car though, rides nice and firm on this suspension. I dont even remeber what it is now. Pics and mods here:

How the hell did I end up with 6 cars and 2 parking stickers anyway...

how are you allowed to have daily drivers faster than most cars on the road?

nice car. how do you like that big16 with the external wastgate?

Damnit, seeing that external setup is the way I want mine. However, I've just read too much about how it hurts flow to the turbo since you have to cut into the flow dividers in the manifold. I think for now I'm just going to port the living hell out of my current setup. I THOUGHT I had ported everything plenty before I put the 14b on, but apparently I didn't. I have nothing planned AT ALL for this weekend, so I think I'll spend the entire time re-porting this shit ;)
I'm going to have to agree with what JoeWagon said. Why on earth do you need a daily driver like that?! Just because your race dsm runs low 11's (and the potential for high 10's it seems) doesn't mean your daily driver dsm has to run 12's! Just messing with ya ;) Regardless, that's a pretty clean 1g. Red 1g's (along with all black 1g's) have always made my pants a little wet, but lets not get into that :D
Nice find! Oh yea, what is used for tuning that thing? Are you just going to use the GM MAF or does it have an AFC as well?

The external setup shouldn't get a bad rep for disturbing exhaust flow. I wouldn't attribute any downsides except cost.

I would agree. Even manifold like the SFP that poeple are running sick times on (much faster than I have gone with it to say the least) is setup the same way. Its less steep of an angle, but it puts the WG runner in the same location. I think it causes less disturbance than a number 1 runner setup where exhaust from the other 3 runners can revert back up the number 1 runner. But both setups are proven to work, and very well. I think part of the reason is that it takes much less exhaust energy to drive the turbo than we are creating. A very significant portion of it is "wasted" through the "wastegate" ;)
I can't really comment much on the car yet, since it has a tendency to knock a lot. I need to get my laptop back from chad so I can tune this piece. It does also have an AFC. Like I said, I'm not even aware of all the mods it has yet. Or at least not enough to remember them all yet. Should make a nice 12 second pump gas car when its tuned. The tranny is a little cranky going into third too, might have to get that fixed.

LOL Good job kevin on getting a nice quick daily driver... That reminds me of last night I was over visiting some friends in a bigger town about 45mins away and a bunch of kids were talking smack.
"Do you race? What is the 1/4mile times on that thing? What do you have done to it?"
Just some stupid ass comments and he wanted to run me in his 1g but wanted to know what I had first. Told him I was all stock, GST... blah blah blah. Well he started talking more shit, my car was starting to get a little warm so I went of a cruise and took off on the road, just floored it, 24psi on my little Evo 16g never felt better thru 1st, 2nd and 3rd. When I came back he was still talking shit, saying how if his car was "READY" he would race me but his 2.6L block wasnt done yet ( he said he bored a 2.0L 4G64T block out to make it a 2.6L  ). Then he got all in my face when I said that wasnt possible saying "I dont like it when people be disrespecting me saying I dont know my DSM's." His friends all started making fun of him and shit saying he didnt know a damn thing and has someone else work on his car, I was like I havent ran it in the 1/4 mile yet cause its too slow and I dont want to waste my time... just go get your car and we'll race, by the way this is my daily driver, its the slowest one I have, you should be able to beat it! My buddys just busted out laughing, ahh what a good night, I love my DSMs! :lol2:

Welp, just took her for a nice 40 mile drive to the insurance company. Too bad they were closed because they suck. But it was the first time I really drove the car. It knocks like a bastard according to the knock guage, but its much better with 93 octane in the tank. The previous owner had demoted it to a daily driver economy car as of late and had been running 87 octane, and not boosting. The tank ran out just as he pulled it in my lot. Which is good :)
Looks like boost is set to 19 psi. I dont have the datalogger set up yet (chad still has the laptop), so I Didn't stay in it for any length of time. But it feels pretty good. I still can't figure out how he arrived at those SAFC settings though, can't wait to get this thing tuned.
The suspension is pretty damn firm. Some of the bumps on 290 where they are still repaving really wake you up :D But it handles nice.
Third gear really is a bitch. It grinds to some extent just about every time I put it in. Downshifting into 3rd for any reason absolutely requires double clutching, or it just wont go in, period. I never bother to learn to do it, though I do know how. So I am a little slow with it, but it goes into gear perfectly when I do it. I'm sure I'll get better at it long before I pony up the cash to fix or replace that tranny :)
FInally took a look at the guages, its got boost, fuel pressure, and water temp all in matching silver face in teh A pillar, matching AFR guage in the console (note the lack of importance given to it, shown by its placement :D ), and a larger oil pressure guage by the right knee.
The 16g spools just about instantaneously. If I can get a good tranny in there I'd like to see if I Can hit 11s on it. I did 12.02 on a big 16g in my 2g, and 12.07 on a small 16g in Ricer's car. I need to get that monkey off my back, wtf.

Actually the plan is to get rid of all of the DSMs, POScort, and truck, by the end of the season. So I can get an EVO ;) But we'll see what happens this year.

i hope your going to clean that thing....its not a bad car but i just hate all the rust on everything on the motor.

Couldnt be bothered. My low 11 second car is just as dirty, and it doesn't slow me down :icon16: Well, its a little cleaner because I pull the motor so often. Some of the dirt is bound to get knocked off. :)
In other news, I think I've finally got the hang of this double clutching. And I dont mean TF&F style. Didn't grind 3rd all day. The trick is to get rpms a little higher than I normally would, 4000 something, do the clutch action quickly, but put in it gear slowly. I guess the theory would be that at higher rpm, the rpm difference between gears is larger. So it falls during the shift, but not so much that its below where it would be in third at the current wheel speed (or intermediate shaft rpm). And putting it in gear slowly gives the synchro more time to accelerate/decelerate the input shaft and get a match (to the intermediate shaft). Sure beats going to 5k in 2nd and shifting straight to 4th anyway :D
