ok.. well this time it sounds like its the tranny..

my 2.0 is a 5 speed.. everytime i shift from first to second gear or even second to third.. it sounds like theres a grinding noise between 4 and 5,000 rpms?.. like something is loose?.. idk.. what is that?.. im not grinding gears.. but it really sounds like something is loose down there.. other than that the car shifts okay.. except for a little rough jump from first into second..

not only that, but.. whenever im in park.. there is a ticking noise coming from the engine... (tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick??).. never goes away.. its pretty much there all the time.. someone pleaseeee helppp

Are you sure it's not an exhaust rattle or something. Is the ticking from under the valve cover.

im positive.. i just found out the ticking was actually the valves.. and that im paranoid, so they sound louder to me than to anyone else.. but are actually normal.. lol.. but the grinding im gettin in between 4000 and 5000 rpms can be heard by anyone, and does not sound good at all.. im 100% sure its originating from the tranny.. i just dont know what it is.. what do you think it could be?

is the noise a grinding or a rattle? i had a rattling noise that was a broken spring in the pressure plate in the clutch...i havent gotten it fixed yet because it hasnt had any real effect...thats what the machanic told me it was anyway

now that i think about it.. it could be a really loud rattle.. i get it in between 4000 and 5000 rpms.. right before i shift into next gear.. do u experience the same?

It's unusual for a trans to have a problem only at a certain engine rpm. Flywheel, clutch & rattles would be more likely.

I have 1999 Jetta as well. It is the old body style though. I have an exhaust rattle when I am about to shift. I have had it for quite a while. I might be the same problem that you are having. The shield that attaches to the bottom of the car, above the muffler is what rattles. Even though it is connected right, it still rattles. It is just the way VW made it. I am going to try tu use some high temp silicone to stick it to the bottom of the car. I'll let you know what happens.

i had a similar problem with my '99 jetta... turned out to be the catalytic converter... and if you're under 80k miles...you can get it done for free...check it out at a dealer
