88 civic quits and wont start ,but starts back after a few min

i have read all the post on car wont start , but this on is a little diffrent , you can be just driving down the road and the engine will just just off, just like you turned the key off, but usually after about 5 min or so it will start back up and run good till it does it again , but it also has the hard starting issue sometimes also , i can drive a mile and shut it off and come back 10 min later and it wont start till it sets for awhile , i put a new main relay on it but it didnt seem to have any affect, and it does have fire going to the plugs when it wont start , and i can her the fuel pump run and shut off when i turn the car on , does anyone know what might be wrong ,

I was thinking that it might be the ignitor but you say you are getting spark correct? You changed the main realy so thats ruled out...

I'd say check the ignitor/ignition for now if you haven't already.

yes i am getting fire when i crank the engine but its not a blue spark , more like a yellow spark , i bought this car from a guy that had been having problems with it ,i thought it was maybe the relay but that didnt help, it had been sitting for about 4 months and i drove it home about a half mile , turned it off and came back out within 10 min and it wouldnt start , i looked to see if i was getting spark and i was ,i listen to see if i could hear the fuel pump and it would turn on and turn off, and then it started and ran good ,i went about 10 miles and it shut off like i turned the key off, i let it sit for about 5 min and it fired back up , i will try the ignitor tomorrow and put a new rotor botton on it , i feel it is in the dist also , thank you

I would have thought main relay also.I have seen some of the cheap after market coils have a week spark.Carl

Yeah, do the rotor, cap, ignitor, coil (cheapest stuff first)...

i'd be interested in knowing if the problem was the ignitor or not after u check it.

cel? codes? I dunno, if your not getting any codes, i would lean more towards a fuel problem.

it quit on me 2 times today within a hour i went to the junk yard and got a new distrubitor 35$ so far its running fine , i guess i will have to wait and see if its going to keep on running , i want to thank everone for all of there sugestions on what it might be , you were a lot of help , thanks alot
