When it dies, check to see if there is spark from the coil.

When it dies, check to see if there is spark from the coil.
coil could be shorting (jumping between wires) out inside it's many windings, putting out lower current then shorting completely from this arcing heating it up and shortly completely. sometimes you can hear it if you put your ear close. sounds like faint clicking. i had one on other vehicle that ran ok with no load on engine. but trying to accelarate fast or climb hills on highway put extra load on cylinders that reduced spark couln't handle i guess. you can get those cheap pencil thingies with rounded end and light, to hold against ignition wires to easily check for current flow there.

Also, in complete darkness, open the hood and look for the coil arcing to something.
It will look like blue sparks.

may sound really dumb to some people, but to others its not commen sence, if you do happen to see the spark, dont touch it! you will become the ground and get one hell of a shock, ive never done it personally but i did watch one of my dumbass friends do it one day on his full size chevey, best repair ever :lol2:

um yeah, that isn't any joke. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT TOUCH THE COIL. SEVERE INJURY, OR DEATH CAN RESULT. NO B.S. (this is coming from a person with their Associates in electronics, and someone with common sense as well)

o i wasnt joking, my buddy really did touch it, he couldnt feel his left arm for over a day, the doctors told him he was lucky that we were inside on a dry floor or he could of been in for much worse... but ever seince then he hasnt assumed im a cautious know it all when it comes to fixing something, he listens, pretty good too... its no joke or laughing matter, there is quite a kick in the ignition/fire system on vehicals

I didn't think you took it as a joke, but many people reading the forum might. it's dangerous, and many people should be cautious.

the ones i like to wait and watch are the people who think they battery being unplugged is a joke and they are the ones who alwase seam to have a ring or some form of metalic jewlry on, people dont realize how dangerous this stuff can be, and they will ignorently take the risk of e.s. so they dont have to reset their clock and re do their presets

True true. Leaving the Ground connected is asking for trouble. Another thing, is using a ratchet near the battery, without having the ground disconnected. I saw a guy working on his car once, who didn't disconnect the Negative terminal, and accidentally touched the ground and the power terminals with the ratchet at the same time. needless to say, he was hospitalized, but very lucky. the battery blew up, (it was old) and he didn't get anything in his eye. I disconnect the whole battery period when working on or near the engine, and remove it from the car. It's more work than necessary, but better safe than sorry.
