super hard shifting

i just had my automatic tranny rebuilt, and now it shifts extremely hard, especially first to second. i mean literally, so hard, that i have to let off the gas at 55 mph when it shifts from 1st to 2nd, or i will lose control of the car.
i have a torque arm and rear lower control arms, and they make a huge difference, but not quite enough. i plan on getting some wider tires (255) later this week, but i have a feeling that that is not going to be enough.

1.) What else can I do (if anything) to rectify this situation?
2.) Will this hurt my tranny to be shifting so hard?

Thanks,
Jeff

Do you have a shift kit? or was it a performance rebuild kit that was used?.

My buddy had the same problem, he had his trans reprogrammed to shift a lower rpm

Oh, wait a second. Don't you have a superchips programmer or something like that. Did you set it for harder shifts?

well, he told me he put stronger solenoids in it, and a torque converter out of an ss, heavier springs, and heavy duty reaction shell. but i though most of that was for strength, but i guess the hard shifting is just a side effect of the strength.

no i didn't set it for harder shifts, it does the same with or without the superchips program installed on the ecu.

Heavier springs will create harder shifts and its fine as long as its being done manually rather than electronically upped line pressure. I am sure your fine. Infact firmer, faster shifts are less damaging than stock sluggish sticks.

cool, thanks, but what else can i do to stop it from spinning out when shifting from 1st to second? do you think wider tires will do it?

Why would u want to stop. I love the way mine kciiks out from under me it always scares the passengers. I like when it does it on the 2-3 shift to except that one doesn't come all the time. Only fix is better tires if u ask me.

what's funny about rectify? and z28boy, im not talking about just scaring the passengers, im talking about literally losing it. it used to squeal, tires would go around maybe once before i had the tranny rebuilt, now i have to let off the gas to gain control of my car, but that energy would be better put to use if it would grip the road rather than spin out.

like i said tires.

Wider tires will help to an extent because of the larger contact patch. Spend a little extra and get some stickier tires. Stay away from all-season tires as they suck ass in all seasons, they are horrible for traction. Look at a summer only tire if you drive during the spring/summer/fall, these have good dry traction and usually decent wet/rain traction too.

damn u know when i got my new rearend with the gears besides the fact i have 2 wheels spining instead of just one now mines shifts hard as heel in 2nd also, it throws the damn car in turns like im gonna go sideways or something but it never looses it, and everytime i go from a dead stop it seems like im trying to race people and im not. just hearing this makes me wounder about mines also

Mine shift hard to but i like it. I learned to keep it undercontrol on the 1-2 shift.

I know all about sorry tires. I can only stall my car to 1100rpm on a launch. Shitty cooper cobras. What tires are u runnin?

the springs are what is making it much harder shift. there are different springs you can put in it to change the firmness of the shift. Go to transmissionhead.com and look at part number 18 and number 37. I'm not sure which one you need but it's one of those. Call them (PATC) at 888-201-2066 and ask them. I just ordered my tranny rebuild parts from them.

that hard of a shift would be good if you are on the track all the time and had huge tires, but it's not safe for a street driven car. Even if you had larger tires that helped for now, you still won't be able to drive that car in the snow nor the rain when it's slick!

Nankang 245/35/ZR19s all the way around

the thing about LS1MAN's tires is that they are 245's and so are mine but the whole tire looks about an inch skinnier than my tire, or even the stock tire, there is no way they are as wide as mine, its almost like they were misprinted tire sizes on there thats why they were free....not talkin junk LS1MAN :sly:

Why would you even bother getting 255's?? If the rims are 9.5" slap on some 275 BFG G-Force KD's - those'll make a difference.

The sidewalls are designed differently on certain tires (they either cut in towards the tread sooner or go down straight towards the pavement). I thought the same thing as you bros. when I first put on my new 285 Firestone's... my old 275 BFG's look WAY wider than these, I even compared my original 245 Goodyears up beside the car and they actually looked bigger than the new Firestones. I don't like these new tires for the rear, gonna switch back to a soft-compound tire.
