Do I need a new clutch??

I put in a new clutch about 5,000 miles ago (5 months) and it's already slipping pretty bad...I can't shift too hard or I get no grip from the clutch. It has a 12,000 mile/12 month manufacturer's defect warranty on it, so I called them up and was talking to the guy. After answering a bunch of questions, he said 9 times out of 10 when it starts slipping that early it's improper installation, which he's probably right about. The flywheel was good when I did it, but I think I used far too much grease...which he said around 5k gets onto the friction surface of the clutch and contaminates it causing it to slip. He then said there's no way to fix this besides buying a new clutch, and I just wanted to ask around to make sure. Would grinding/machining down some of the clutch surface make it good as new as far as grip? (obviously it would decrease the life of it) Or is it gonna be just "grease soaked" all the way through the material?

ps - if I have to get a new clutch, i'm not going el-cheapo on it again.

Is that a OEM Clutch? Did you resurface your flywheel when you replaced your clutch?

I'm not sure, but I can't imagine being able to machine a clutch. Besides the fact that the grease is probably imbedded well below the surface of the clutch face, even if you could machine it, you're gonna have to take about 50,000 miles (guessing here) worth of material off of it to get to the useable material and then, it would not be worth anything anyway. Bottom line, is that it would probably never be right again.

You can ask your mechanic, but personally, I'd just get a new one and chalk it up to experience.
