gas gage gone wild

The last 3 times I've filled up my gas tank, the gas gauge starts bouncing from full to empty, ding, ding, ding, repeat....and after a few days of driving (till it gets 3/4 - 1/2 tank) it goes back to reading correctly. The sensor in the tank must be cuckoo, any suggestions (cheap fixes)? (1998 Aurora, 117k wonderful miles). Thanks!

I think every driver has gone thru this. There are past threads on this issue, which contain some very helpful information. My problem lasted about a month and then went away. The cause seems to be a flaky fuel level sensor in the tank. My problem coincided with the Shell gasproblems a few months ago. I have not used Shell gas since then.

I had that problem a while ago, went away without spending money though.
I stop pumping gas as soon as the pump stops - don't add in extra to round off the price, or see how much you can get in it, the extra seemed to cause the gas gauge problems.

You're right, I tend to overfill, so I will take your advice and stop that - thank you!

Try and put a fuel system treatment additive in there. The flakey gas gauge seems to be caused by dirt and crud from "inferior" gas. Try to fill up with Chevron or so and put in that additive. Should help it go away. You have nothing to lose.
