I have a 1999 Suburban that has a leaking water pump. I need to change it. It seems pretty straight forward. Are their any things I need to be aware of? Such as: particular tools, seals, or replacement hints?

Fairly straightforward fix. Only issue could be if your fan clutch threads onto the water pump. If you have an air chisel, that'll knock it loose very easily. Otherwise, you'll have to use a fan clutch wrench or be creative to get it off. Take the fan clutch off before releasing belt tension. That'll help hold the pump shaft. Other than that, it's smooth sailing!

Here is a reply to myself after I completed the water pump replacement. You do not need a fan clutch tool. The trick is to leave the belt on and tight. Take a 1 7/16 inch wrench and put it behind the fan onto the big shaft nut attaching the fan to the water pump. Put it straight up and crack it counterclockwise with a hammer. This should loosen the nut. After that just spin the fan off and the rest is easy. Make sure you clean the old seal off of the engine. It is small and easy to miss.
