im thinking about buying an 89 F-150 XLT after i totaled my S10 last week (the other guys fault). Because I should be receiving settlement soon, I was considering buying an F-150 near my house. because of the age and the mileage (over 100,000) I am considering swapping the inline 6 to a 5.8 L, 351 CID or a 7.5L, 460 CID. which would be the better decision and how much am i looking at spending for this swap? also what extra changes would need to be made. any help is appreciated. thanks

Don't touch that engine, its a keeper! The I6 is one of Fords strongest and most durable engines ever made. It will outlast most others even with its 100000 mile headstart and has power equivalent to the 5.0 and more of it at the lowend so you'll see much better starts off the line too. Take it for a spin, you won't be disappointed.
Cheers,
Popa Tim

I like the i-6 on my 88 f150, It is pretty strong, although I wouldn't really call it quick. This may have as much to do with the 4spd manual though. Apparently the 300 has the same tourque as the 351, so it's great for hauling, towing, and other heavy uses. If you're planning to use yours as a truck, It works very well for that purpose. If you want to be able to do 90mph there may be better choices though.

Yeah, the rearend gearing plays a significant role too. Theres a sticker on the drivers doorjam that should list the rearend and gearing. What do you have ?

thanks for all the help. i'm going to test drive it either tommorrow or thursday. i was just wondering what people had to say about it since i have limited knowledge being a former chevy driver. i was also wondering if there are any major problems i should be looking at when i consider buying a truck like this one? to add a few more specifics it is an 89 F-150 XLT regular cab, I-6 with EFI. i'll check on the rearend gearing tommorrow. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Dont take out the 300 , its the best ford motor made. You would have to change almost everything in the truck in order to place a 5.8 or 7.5 in the truck if it is equipped for a 300 I 6 .
