fuel pump

sounds like the fuel pump is always running even with the car off. i dont smeel fuel so there isnt a leak in the line. any suggestions at what it could be???

I have a 1992 Ranger that is doing the same thing. Runs the battery dry unless I pull the fuel pump fuse under the hood every time I shut the truck off.
I am thinking it is the fuel pump relay but I do not know where it is located or how much to replace.

On your 92, on the passenger side, there should be 2 relays (up near the hood seam). One is the ecc, and the other is the fuel pump relay. I can't remember which is which, so you may have to unhook one and see if it killed your computer. I'm thinking it's the one with the green plug (at least on my 88).

First I would unhook the relay and see if it turns off. It might not be the relay, it might be the thing that is triggering the relay to turn on. I don't have my wiring diagrams handy, so I can't tell you which is + to the fuel pump/+ fuel pump source and which is + to the relay trigger. It's more than likely the fuel pump relay, but there's a good chance it isn't. You will need to do some investigation with a volt meter to determine the cause. Usually just replacing parts with out investigation causes you to spend more money that what you have to.

Thanks Pete. I figured it out. It was the fuel pump relay and it was the green one. It was located UNDER the fuse panel under the hood. I had to pull the whole fuse assembly off then turn it over to pull the relay out. I unpluged it and checked it with a voltmeter and all was fine. I plugged it back in and it works now. It must have just stuck open and unplugging reset it. I will buy a new one now anyway.
