Strange Problem.

My 1990 Eclipse is dying on me, but before it dies I hear a clicking sound coming from under the dash. It did it to me a week ago, I parked the car for a few days. I went back to it a couple days ago and it started right up. Ended up driving it about 25-30 miles with no problem. I go back out there today to drive it to work, get about a block and the clicking starts up again, car dies. I let it sit an hour and was able to drive it back home, but that's all. Any ideas?

I think it has something to do with your ECU i think its messing up.

I read about a post like this a while back dont remember you might need a new ECU or maybe try reseting it unhook the battery for like 10 min.

sounds like you should check your ecu. 1g's have a problem with the capacitors leaking and then the board frys and you need to get a new one. if you pull the ecu out now you can just replace the caps and not buy a whole ecu

Ok, my Haynes manual has an ECM, Electronics Control Module, would that be the same thing?

probably not. the ecu is directly behind the radio. sometimes its called the engine control module (ECM)

probably not. the ecu is directly behind the radio. sometimes its called the engine control module (ECM)That is where the manual says it is. It's dark here so I can't get to it tonight, but looks to be about the size of a hard drive, behind the radio in the center console. Makes sense, that's where I was hearing the clicking sounds. Anyway, about these caps, is this an unplug/plug thing or is this soldering? Any ideas about where to get the replacement caps?

they are soldered in. they should be clip in lol. just take them out remember which spots they go in and go to radioshack. they dont have to match exactly but the people there should be able to help you

Ok, sorry to be a pain, but here's what I've got. I got the ECU out, opened it up and found this.

warning ... BIG pics.

Now, it doesn't look like there is anything wrong here, anyone care to guess which cap is blown or about to blow?

edit: The part numbers I found are 8658 E2T33672A

Looks like a new computer is gonna run me around 400, minus 100 core. That sound about right to you guys? Anything special I can put in this while I'm replacing?

Just replace the caps regardless. It is possible that it looks like nothing is wrong but they could be. That is my experience with electronics at least. for example, an amplifier could not work, but look fine when you open it up and when I replace one cap, it is all fine and dandy.

Ok, I got impatient. Called the local salvage yard, got a replacement computer for 100 bucks. If it goes again, then I'll fork out the 400 and just buy a new one.
