steering column buzz

I've got a 2001 Grand Am GT Coupe (with the V6).. when turning the steering wheel left or right I hear a zzzzz type buzz or squeal. No sound can be heard in the engine compartment.. only inside the car. I've searched the threads and really only found steering pump/rack issues which I would think would be noisy in the engine compartment as well. Any ideas? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. Is there any play in the wheel? or any type of moment it shouldn't be making?.

Thanks for the response... there may be some slight movement in the wheel before the wheels turn. I had it in to the garage and everything (ball joints, etc.,) looks tight. The reason I had it in was for them to try to fix a rattle/clunk in the front passenger side wheel/strut. They diagnosed it as a strut bushing and drilled into the bushing to install a washer... still have the rattle and now a sqeak on both sides. I'm planning to replace struts and mounts in a couple of weeks (85K and it's time anyways).

Does it sound like an electrical type of buzz?
You might have something wrong with your turn signal switch.
If it is a metal on metal squeak, try a bit of white lithium grease where steering post meets the supports.
