It's a DEBATE

... So why the hell do people have to resort to attacks? Shit, I try to challenge someone's thinking and you'd think I told them that they are stupid and deserve to die or something. What the hell?!?! It's called CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS. An outside opinion challenges your thoughts and ideas and makes you formulate new ideas. My god, what the hell has happened to schooling that people can't REASON without getting shitty?
That is all.
That is all.

well, depending on how the person was, they might have been made to feel stupid, so they became angry.
one way to think about it.
one way to think about it.

I wish I knew the answer to that one. This is why a whole lot of people avoid political debates because it ends up being nothing but a mud slinging fest.
The only thing I can think of is people see that if you disagree with their view and challenge it they take it as a personal attack against them. That is the only explanation I have for you.

:iagree: when you dont agree with someone and state your own opinion they take it as a personal attack on them and retaliate (sp?) with insults out of anger.

I so much agree with tangie.
One thing I've noticed as well is that when a debate is going on, regardless what the topic may be, if one debater makes a very good point and the other debater realizes he is right, most of the time instead of admitting that they were wrong, will continue on with their point of view. Just so they do not look like they are caving in to the idealogy.

"I don't like the Icelandic Prime minister."
So what the hell's wrong with the Icelandic Prime Minister, Naki; does he eat babies? :lol2:
Seriously though, all the above is true. You can have the exact opposite point of view, make thoughtful points and still have respect for the other person's viewpoint, even though you think it's wrong. There are too many that see their viewpoint as the only possible viewpoint. Credit due for believing strongly in your convictions and having confidence in yourself, but you've also got to have an open mind and be intelligent enough to know that you could, just possibly, be wrong. Or at least the other person could also be right.

so what if people want to argue, maybe thats just their way of debating. Just because you don't like to debate with insults and cuss words doenst mean you should hate on everyone else, and act all high and mighty, like an uppity little snob.
just kidding. It's true some people don't know how to have a civilized debate, but.... we all do that sometimes. Or if you don't anymore, then there was a time when you did. People just have to grow out of it. Its an annoying fact of life.

The problem is that some people NEVER grow out of it.

It irks me to no end. Yes, I admit, I have resorted to name calling, but it's not something of which I am proud. But why is it that when I do NOT call names and merely publish a point (or several) in opposition to someone else's that I'm automatically the stupidest shithead to ever walk the planet? I pray my school kids don't think that of me for challenging their thoughts. What is wrong with me? MAKING SOMEONE THINK!?!? I deserve to die.

For lack of a better term, call it webrage.
People will write in a more harsh or critical fashion than they would say in person. The anonymity of the net provides the personal distance people would otherwise not have, face to face.
Furthermore, debates on the net lets many people work out the rage and/or frustration that may be a part of their daily lives.
I am sure many of us are on other forums; generally I find AF to be much more civil than some other automotive sites.

Jesus. The politcal boards here are as tame as a game of candyland compared to the shit-sligning at the rx7club.com political board.
There is a very good reason why i very very rarely participate in an internet politcal/religious/philosphical discussion, and you guys hit the nail right on the head as to why.

I got real mad and resorted to name calling in the car audio forums in here.. lol.. Im surprised I didn't get booted immediately for what I said...it was actually pretty funny, but they just really got me mad. I may have started the name calling, but they were jerks first so they started it. Anyways, I think it was Freakray who warned me... thanks for not banning me. This is a very decent forum.
