engine swaps on a automatic geo metro hb??

hi, im completely new to the whole car tweaking community so I appreciate any advice on my first project. I recently puchased a '94 geo metro hb with an auto tranny, the problem is the engine is pretty much dead and needs to be replaced. I read somewhere that suzuki swift gti twin cam engines are good and affordable engines alternatives but I was wondering whether i would have to do a lot of fabrication to the geo's block in order to fit it. Also, would I have to replace the tranny in order to do the swap?

This topic has been discussed quite a bit in past threads. Search this forum for those threads.

To summarize those threads: a lateral engine swap (1.0 AT for 1.0 AT) is fairly straight forward and can be done by the average person.

An upgrade swap (1.3 AT for a 1.0 AT) is more difficult. You would need to fabricate the engine mounts. And you would need to beef up the front axle to compensate for the additional torque generated by the larger engine.

The consensus opinion seems to recommend lateral swaps. If you want a beefier engine, then get a project car that already has that engine/axle combo installed and go from there.

Yes, it's a little more difficult. But the engine mounting is only part of the problem. You can use stock GTi engine mouts, except the transmission mount will need to be re-located. Also, you'll need a complete swift GT automatic wiring harness. Installation of the harness requires removing the dashboard. You'll need the computer, axles, front hubs and brakes, and fuel pump too. It's no small project. But if you're really serious about it, let me know.

It is so much easier just to get a Swift and then go from there.

thanks for all the help. I read all the topics about engine swaps on this forum but my main question was that auto tranny. I wasnt sure what to do with it. appreciate all the help tho....

I wont start on this project for a few more months most likely late June or early July of this year. But when I do ill be posting my progress as I go.

I was thinking about swapping in a manual tranny, so would a swift tranny fit right into the geo?? Because I was thinking of just pulling parts(mounts, tranny etc from a 89 swift gti) the engine I wanna get remanufactured.

I like my little '90 Metro 1.0/AT. I would just swap the engine with a JDM and keep it as an AT. Time could be better spent on other projects unless you absolutely are set on converting to manual. I'm not sure you will be satisfied with the results of your labor though.

I have both 1.0/AT and 1.0/5spd. Neither has much power (what do you expect for 3 cyl?). But they get around and get pretty decent gas milage. 35mpg for the AT, 45 mpg for the 5spd.
