Is there any difference between a head that came off a 6 bolt motor then a 7bolt motor? i.e can a head that came off a 6bolt motor fit on a 7 bolt block?

it is the same motor yes you can use the head off of a 6-bolt on a 7-bolt you should search first

It may be a good idea for you to also do some searching.

You are correct that a head from a 6 bolt motor will fit onto a 7 bolt head, however the stud holes will be larger then need be in accepting the bolt size which creates room for moving. This is never an issue when you have the guides installed anyway. As stated, the differences include the size of the head bolt holes, (which are 11mm for 7 bolts, and 12mm for 6 bolts respectively), and their flow characteristics, which is a different story. Thus, you won't be able to put a 2g head onto a 1g motor, at least without modification. I have successfully installed a 2g(7bolt) head onto a 1g(6bolt) block. What has to be done to do this is the stud/bolt holes in the head will need to be drilled out 1mm more to accept the 6 bolt(12mm) studs/bolts.

Therefore, the swap only goes one way, unless you put some work into it.

It may be important to note that not all 1G's are 6 bolt. I believe that only the 1990-1992 were. 93-94 are 7 bolt.

This is absolutely true. I was assuming that this was known, but I guess it was worth throwing out there.

Taking a 6 bolt head and installing it onto a 7 bolt block is a commom upgrade. Therefore yes you will perfectly fine doing this. If he is looking to make any good power, investing in a good set of ARP's would be wise as well. Good luck!

They usually cost ~100 bucks. Worth every penny.

you could also look into getting a 1g head from a 92.5-94. it will still have all the items you are looking for but will have the smaller diameter bolt holes etc. it still has the larger ports etc with none of the downsides.
