stupid problem with Cassette door

This is gonna sound like a stupid problem, but I have a feeling there's a simple fix. my 98 528i has the cassette player in the upper possition with the wood grain door that closes over it.
My issue is that that wood door used to open slowly and smooth as does the ashtray and cigarette lighter. Now instead it just jumps open.
It still works as far as the push to open mechanism and it stays locked when closed, but I hate that it now just pops open when I push it in.

Anybody have any thoughts?

the only fix is to replace the radio lid assembly. It takes about an hour.
