I have an 1983 Z38 that i put a GM crate 350 into, recently the ol' 700-r4 started acting up and one day while trying to start the car it sudden'y stopped turning and the force broke the starter housing. i replaced the starter and it won't crank the motor. I have the tranny removered because I am converting it to a 5 speed until i can afford a 6 speed:2cents: . I was wondering why my motor won't turn. It wasn't low on oil or anything. It was running fine just the day before. I've had it do this before but not to the same extent. The engine would crank but it had a "rough" spot that it would slow through. And this only happens on cold/wet days.

Sounds like a electrical short somewhere or a bad battery. but try spinning crank with a breaker bar or wrench and see if there is alot of resistance or if it just won't move.

Both the battery and starter are new and work just finr. I have the transmission off and tried turning the engine manually and It's stuck.

what do you mean the 700r4 was acting up? how do you know the transmission was acting up?

did you try to rotate the engine both ways or just one way? take the spark plugs out and try to rotate it. the compression will make it more difficult. if your bodyweight won't rotate it and you start bending the crowbar, then you have internal engine problems. do you have a warranty?

you need to be more desciptive. what is "acting up?"

No fears man, its nothing a 10lbs sledge hammer wont take care of. Just whack it a few times untill it starts and if it doesnt start again just keep whackin it with that hammer. trust me you'll feel alot better........

the transmission was acting up because it slips a lot and it makes horrible noises in gear. Also it wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd until about 4000rpm and then would go to third gear almost immediatly. So i tore it out and am replacing it with a manual. I found out that when the car was sitting it was facing uphill so water pooled up on the indent for the "scoops" on the hood and dripped down the intake and into the engine. I removed the plugs and sprayed penetrating oil into each tube and I am waiting 24 hours to try and crank it again. Hopefully it's fine because the engine only has about 4,000 miles on it.
