rev limiter

Does anyone know of a good rev limiter to install on my 2.5 85 5-speed? The old iron-dukes can't take too much rpm, and I don't want to blow another. I'd appreciate any help.

I know that the V-6 have a rev limiter at 6250 rpm. Your Fiero has a tachometer use it and learn to shift a 3000 rpm.

why did you put another duke back in the car??? should have went with a better 4cyl if thats what you wanted.

What better 4-bangers will bolt up to the fiero? The duke's a classic, as long as you don't drive it like a race car it will last forever.

The duke should have a rev limiter set at 5,000 RPM.. I've hit it a few times in my 88. The engine sure vibrates over 4,500 though, so I don't take it higher than that anymore.

As far as I know, GM doesn't make another 4 cylinder that will bolt up to the Fiero transmission, nor the engine mounts for that matter. There's a few V8s and plenty of V6s though!
There's at least two Ecotec swaps in progress.. that requires an adapter plate or use of the tranny the Ecotec was originally bolted to.
The most popular 4cyl swap is the high output Quad-4. You have to use the transmission from the Quad-4 car since it has a different bellhousing pattern, but its otherwise the same transmission as in the Fiero V6 cars. The proper axles are built from a mix of other GM axle parts. Custom motor mounts are necessary and of course there's the wiring..

Thanks for the info, I'd like to put a big engine in my fiero, but I'm working on a budget here. I think the good ol' duke will do just fine, being that I'm not a hard driver. I want to put a rev limiter on just in case, you know, if I miss a gear, or I'm downshifting too fast. I appreciate the help though.

Aye, I was just noting all the reasons to not put in a "better" 4cyl, especially for someone not racing the car or even driving it hard. Its a lot of work!

Keep in mind a rev limiter wont protect you from missing a gear or downshifting too fast, just from forgetting to shift soon enough. All it does is cut off fuel or spark to stop the engine from making any power... but that doesn't mean it will instantly stop the motion of the wheels from rotating the engine past its redline if you downshift into the wrong gear.
