my wife bought a 2002 cavalier, 2.2 liter. I tried to get the oil filter off, but my finger could JUST touch it. Is there an easier way to get to the filter? Does something have to be removed to get your hands in there? Please help my arm is sore.

The dual-overhead-cam EcoTec engine has an unusual oil filter located on top of the engine. Remove the engine air intake hose. That's the oil filter canister just to the right of, and below, the end of the open air intake tube. Use a proper size wrench to remove the canister lid. This engine uses a special filter cartridge.
The idea behind it.
'Innovative cast-in oil filter housing eliminates crawling under the car to perform filter changes. The design also eliminates throw-away oil-filter "cans" that retain excess used oil that typically ends up in landfills'

Well i am going to assume that its an auto if your having this much of a problem. I am in the same boat when i changed its oil the first time. First of all its not possible to get the oil filter out from under neath the car due to the location of the exhaust pipe, oil pan, and slosh box ( aka auto transmission box) Before you loosen the oil filter, put a plastic bag over the flex pipe on the exhaust, because the location of the filter is going to cause oil to seap into it when you remove it and would take a few days to burn off and the smell is annoying. Crappy GM design and this is a way to over come it. Drain the oil pan first. To access the filter stand on the passenger side hovering over the radiator resovoir. Reach behind your power steering pump and down behind your Fuel rail and you should be able to see your oil filter. Reach your left arm down and turn the filter to the left. Use mechanic's gloves for extra gripping power or just regular garden gloves. THey should only be on hand tight. I use the fram sure grip because they are easy to get on and off. Then just manuever your hand out with the filter in hand. Its really the only easy way to get it out. G'luck.

2002 was made with 3 engine types. In the first half they used the 2200 and the LD9, in the second half they used the ecotec.
