Where's the poll?
I should think that all the members of this automotive forum would think they're above average drivers. I do.

Did you see the thread where everybody told about their tickets. Plus in my opinion, habitual Street Racing does not constitute a good driver. Also just because you can drift between the 2 light poles in the wal-mart parking lot at the perfect angle doesnt mean your are cautious of others.
I may need to change the wording of the poll. Im not really looking for driving SKILL just GOOD drivers. ie cautious, aware, considerate, LAW ABIDING....etc

OK so we will base it off of an insurance companies standard or a police officers.

^That's when statistics and polls become BS. When you throw in these variables that change everything. According to insurance and definitely by law, im a bad driver but i think, and most of my friends and other poeple think im good. they've seeen how i drive and perhaps either they're just stupid or very trustworthy (which in a car doesnt matter cuas eu can be good but the other can't) yet they will still ride with me.
I hate statistics...bunch of BS

thats the point i am trying to make.... the majority of people think they are above average drivers. you THINK you are but if law officials/insurance companies dont think you are....your not. like it or not they are the deciding factor on wether you are or not. think about it

Absolute rubbish.
I've been driving for 3 and a half years. My sister has been driving for 5. I have one accident on my record, she has none. Her insurance premium is lower than mine. However even she will happily admit that i'm a far better driver than she is. Just because they decide our premiums it doesn't make them the deciding factor. Far too many other variables.

I guess I'm lucky in that I consider myself an above average driver,AND my insurance company does as well. I have been driving for over 20 years and have been with the same insurance company all that time. Not having an accident during that time <Knocks on wood> I receive a roughly 20% reduction in my premiums because of their good driver program. I also take the defensive driver's course every three years for that 10% discount on premiums. I've raised my deductibles onmy policies, and try to drive as safe as possible. But it's the other drivers you really have to worry about. It amazes me how poorly a lot of drivers are out there. I have seen driving in general worsen over the last 20 years with more and more people running red lights, and stop signs, speeding, talking on their cell phones (illegal in my state,) turning right on red when there is a sign posted not to, and generally not paying attention while driving. I guess alot of this has been attributed to people not budgeting their time effectively, therefore being late for work, school, appointments, etc.

it doesnt matter if you, sister, mom ,dad, uncle, cousin, etc. thinks you are the best driver... the first 5-0 that doesnt think you are and you lose.

So what is the point of this thread?
Ok everyone, gather into two groups. Those on the right with no points on their license, you're the best. Those on the left, shame on you...

What do you think about me ASTAutoSales:
18, 1 ticket almost 2 years ago, a accident 2 years ago (my fault, but insurance never found out about it, and I didn't get a ticket either). Until about 6 months ago I was constantly speeding, usually 20 above the limit. Only got caught once. Then I decided that I didn't another ticket and I've been religiously driving the speed limit to 5 over. I constantly have to avoid other people hitting me, especially in parking lots. So the insurance company will think that I'm a safe driver in just a few months, even though I feel very confident driving 20 above the limit. What do you think about me?

I'm going to be like the 11 people before me and say I'm above average. I say this though because it has been said that kids who have played video games from a young age are better drivers by 20%.

I have the reflexes of a puma so I'm pretty much the best driver here. :p
Plus, I learned how to get SL55's completely sideways which traction control left on, that's gotta be worth somethin'.

my mom is an above average driver then, according to this poll. But she is scared shitless in the rain and snow. She thinks she is going to hydroplane at 35 mph with her 500$ tires when it starts to sprinkle. She does NOT understand the idea of countersteering. Let her car fishtail and she will steer the wrong direction. The police and insurance companies consider her an above average driver.
Me though... I speed when I know I can get away with it, I can control my car like its part of me, and I drive safe when I need to. I have been followed by cops a zillion and one times... of those zillion and one times (of being followed), they have never come up with a reason to pull me over. They get bored because I drive too perfect, and they leave me alone. But, Ive been caught speeding twice. One time I was delivering pizza, and was in a hurry, so I was going 55 on the highway. The cop tagged me right as I was coming around a really long turn... that was over the limit and I got a ticket. I got pulled over another time, but I didnt get a ticket. Since August 02, those are the only times I have been pulled over. Since August 02, I could have been pulled over at least 2,000 times. I'm too quick for that. I think my ability to avoid cops, and not get caught for speeding makes me a good driver. That paired with my driving SKILLS, not my insurance RATING, I know Im an above average driver.
This poll should be, "Are You A Law Abiding Driver?" Because I know I am able to drive better than the average Joe. Im not voting.

i've had my drivers liscence for about a year now, and ive had no tickets or accidents yet. Most teens get a car accident or at least a ticket their first year of driving, but i havent. im above average for my age group at least. :D

I consider myself an above average driver because I have a clean record, my insurance company thinks so, I have logged over 1 million miles, and I take 2 16hour defensive driving courses a year for work.

I think some clarification on the definition of "good driver" is in order; everyone seems to be of differing opinions as to what "good" means, and I think it's based on point of view.
Does good driver mean:
1) law abiding
2) no tickets
3) low insurance
4) safe
5) puma-like reflexes (I liked that one )
6) experienced
7) race-trained
8) traffic awareness
9) having taken safety classes
10) some other meaning?
So AST what did you mean? I believe it's an overall combination of factors.
I think I'm an above average driver. With 26 years behind the wheel and having driven near Washington, DC for several years I am aware of my surroundings, usually follow the law, have low insurance costs, and haven't had a violation in a few years.
Yes, I've had accidents, and learned from them. I've gotten scads of tickets (almost all for speeding) and learned from that too. I've been to driver training classes as an adult(result from too many tickets)
When I was 16 I thought for SURE that I knew how to drive and that other people on the road were dumbasses. Now I STILL know they're dumasses :D but am much safer than at 16.

I pride myself on being a safe driver; no accidents, one ticket and that was 5 years ago; according to the state of Florida, I'm a "safe driver." And I know I'm better than everyone else b/c I look well down the road for hazards, I even look for nails in the road so that I don't run over them and puncture a tire. Only thing I wish is that my insurance company would reward me for my safe driving habits, but I guess I'll have to wait another two and a half years until I turn 25 to wait for a decrease in my premium. It's not fair that I should be classified w/ all the other jerks who can't drive and cause millions of dollars (correction, billions) in auto collision costs. A new standard should be made so that I don't spend countless thousands of dollars a year b/c I'm classified in a genre of "wreckless" drivers.
