Camaro ss air filter

I have a 2002 Camaro SS, and my son suggests putting a K & N air filter on it. I have some questions:

1) Does it protect the engine?
2) Does it affect perfromance?
3) Does it affect warranty?

I can tell that techy language is spoken here among experts, so request answer in plain English - while I can drive among the best, I know very little about engines!!

First welcome to the forum and yes K&N filter out very tiny particles and stop them from entering your engine which protects it. Yes it helps performance by allowing air to pass more freely threw the filter and more air means more effiecient combustion and more power(only a couple of horsepower if anthing,maybe 5 if your lucky) . No it won't void your warranty its just a air filter not a supercharger,
