One more rack question

Ok, got the new rack, identical to my old one. But on my old one on the neck that sticks up where the steering coloum attaches, on the outboard side of the neck is a threaded hole with what looked like a oil sending unit in it, but it has no provision for any wire on it. The new rack has a steel plug in this hole. I know some racks have a unit like this with a wire attached, this one does not, Nor is there any loose dangling wire any where in the vicinity.anyone know what this thing is for?
I ask because my "unit" looks to be leaking.And wonder if i need it or not. Looked in a manual, doesnt say a thing about it.
looked at Advance web site, shows a pressure switch with wire connector, checked, there is no wire around there anyplace, hmmmmm

I believe it sends a signal to idle up the motor so it won't die under extreme steering load (like holding it to the lock) I remember one cutlass ciera we had in the shop had a problem with that, had to replace it (the sender) I'm assuming that's the same thing.

Yeah you are right, and i found out the plastic part of the sender was broken off, looked like it never had one, the plastic part had the wire terminals in it, so it looked like it never had wires, finally found where someone had stuffed the wires and hid them too...

If you hook it up, be careful...I vaguely remeber a few of those coming through the shop where that system had gone wonky, and when you turned the wheel hard(like in a parking manuever), the motor would idle up to like 2500 RPM, and you couldn't stop the car. I think there might have even been a recall issue about that. Might be why it was unplugged. Might be why the terminals were broke off, so noone would try to plug it back in. Might be how they dealt with it at the dealer. I do remember it being a safety concern. Sorry I didn't say anything before, but the memory of this is slowly coming back to me. I't been a long time since I dealt with that problem.

I remember pulling one into the shop with that complaint, when I cut the wheel to pull into the bay, it took off, trying to run away, and it was all the brakes could do to hold it back. I almost hit the wall of the shop with it.

good to know, i put the rack in without one anyway, it works fine as is, the heck with buying a new one.
