This is a "State" thing. In general, if your state sends you two plates, a rear and a front plate, you are required to have them on the car.

in california, you must have your front plate somewhere on your front bumper. If you don't its a fix-it ticket.

Yes, and they might give you a 2nd ticket for obstructed view if the cop isn't in a good mood.
On the other hand, I'm in NY, and we are required to have 2 plates on...I've had this car for a year and a half and refuse to put the front plate on, and I've never had a cop look twice (and my car does get plenty of attention). I'd rather pay a $30 fix-it-ticket than have my front plate on. So if you don't want it on, don't put it on...and see how your local cops are.

Move to Michigan or Indiana  We only have plates in the back.

there's always a place on the car to put it, such as in a grille opening, or hung from the bottom of a bumper overhang.

We need both plates up here as well. As far as the law goes (and what attorney’s say), it is up to the cops individual discretion to decide what is acceptable or not. I got my first ticket in 3+ years last summer driving with my plate tucked in the front of the dash on the drivers side. It was end of the month and the dude saw an easy ticket to give – didn’t want to hear any of my excuses. Besides that time I’ve never had problems with the plate.

Massachusetts also has some rear plates only but that was years ago and I'm stuck with the new ones, I am thinking about painting mine to look like the old ones or just striping the red letters off.
Has anyone seen car commercials where the plate is painted over the same color as the car? That would be funny, they wouldnet have any way to tell if I had the single plate or not lol. I bet its illegal though.

Well, its against the law to deface a licence plate, and its also the responsibility of the vehicle operator to ensure the plates are well maintained and visible (ie. no snow/dirt blocking the plate, must be replaced if rusty, etc...). So ya that wouldn't hold up.

I don't think they're even notice if the lettering was a different color lol. I'll have to find out.

Again, its all up to the particular cops discretion whether to charge you or not. Here in Ontario the licence plate slogan or message at the bottom reads "YOURS TO DISCOVER". A few years back my buddy had a 5.0L LX and one day he took some white out (literally, the pen & paper stuff) and covered up the Y and VER so his plate read "OURS TO DISCO"... You could barely notice it unless you were stuck behind him in traffic for a few hours. Well, he got at least 1 ticket where the cop was a totaly ass - my friend even started scraping the shit off on the spot but the cop was like see you in court (they get overtime right, don't forget that).
So, depends on the cop and also what kind of attitude you put out on the road - I'm actually going to get into that in another thread, I'll post a link for anyone who wants to check out. Good debate topic.

Thats funny.....
In Ontario, I regularly see some pretty rusty plates, some are virtually illegible........and being driven by older people. They don't seem to get tickets. But the kids in the loud civics with the clear plastic covers sure get plate obstruction tickets, even if the plates are perfectly legible. To me the cop's bias is pretty clear (no pun intended)
I did see a car yesterday where the "ONTARIO" and YOURS TO DISCOVER were upside down. Obviously the plate had been placed in stamping machine upside down at the time of manufacture. However, the licence plate office (MTO) had sold them AND the car owner had installed it, with the numbers the right way up but the slogan upside down. I wonder if they will get a ticket......

Here's a link to the other thread I was talking about - its entitled "Race-ial profiling" or something like that, basically about how cops unfairly target kids in done up cars...

I'm in Michigan, but they can stop you AND give you a ticket if your license plate is covered up by anything.(For Example: SNOW)

i live in cali and i've never gotten a ticket for no front license plate, and i've never had a front license plate in my two years of driving. i usually get pulled over for something else, like my back license plate light on my stang that i never bothered to fix(like they aren't going to tailgate me so close that my license plate reads like a big neon sign anyways). then the cop would look, and say, "oh, and you need to get that front license plate put on." mostly if you have a clean record like mine(driving school for my only ticket) they won't hastle you too much, just a warning usually. they mostly want reasons to pull your fast looking car over to see if your drunk or stoned or whatnot.
oh, and i followed a highway patrol for about half an hour yesterday and he didn't seem to care about the front license plate, but he did care about the car in front of us which probably didn't have registration.

someone mentioned not having a place to put the front plate... some newer cars do not have a holder for the front plate, go to or call your (or any of your car's make's) dealer and ask for a holder for it.. a friend of mine bought a mini cooper s, and it turned out that they have a thing that snaps on to the bumper for states that have front plate requirements
i personally think front plates are silly, they're not lit, they dont have validation stickers, if the fuzz is looking for your number, you'll have passed them and they'll be looking at your back plate before they'll be able to see the front one.
