Hi, I want to have a stereo installed into my 2004 Pontiac Grand am
I contacted a car audio store and they told me I had to buy a relocation kit or something like that for $100, He said I need it because if I don't use it the air bag light will keep coming on is he telling me the truth or is the guy trying to rip me off? I don't want to buy the damn thing if I don't have to....

Call a dealer and ask them the same thing you asked the car-stereo installer first. It IS possible, but I highly doubt it, so goto the people who actually work with the ride daily first.

IF the stereo is a differant size and mounts differantly from the stock unit, then yes you will need an adapter kit, but it costing you $100 sounds aufly high.

Gtmud is right if the radio is a different size you will need an adapter kit. When I bought my kit it was less than $10.00 at Radio Shack, that was a long time ago but I can't see $100.00. Where in the hell is he going to relocate the radio to? and how does the radio relate to the Air Bag light? Watch your step with this guy! something doesn't sound right. The factory radio is in that location why would replacing it be an issue? Makes no sense to me. You might want to contact another installer or like Gtmud says contact the dealer. You may also be able to get some info from the new radio manufacturer via their web site. Good luck.

Ok i can tell you exactly why you need the relocation kit you have to options, 1st they can just relocate the stock stereo somewhere in the car for that there is a special wire needed for it the wire cost about 70.00 the 2nd option you can buy a modulator that does the same thing as relocating the stereo the modulator cost 100.00 to 150.00 the reasib for all of this is because it keeps all of the door chimes and notification chimes working without the modulator or stereo relocated you would lose all the dorr chime, some advice unless you know how to work on a 2004 GA i wouldnt because if you dont disconnected the radio proberly and turn off certain elements in the car the air bags will deploy while switching out the stock radio....
Pontiac GA have some tricky security features and they put to many components together to save space and time....
But you not getting ripped off unless you pay more than a 100.00 for the wire or modulator.

Find yourself a good shadetree installer, they should be able to figure something out.
You will indeed need the relocation kit in order to keep all the factory crap up and running though. They usually rellocate the factory unit to the trunk and those kits are expensive and hard to find for the lay person.
