I would check out the local wrecking yard and replace the parts.

Do you have a lot of acid rain in your area?

o my bad sorry haha, do you think all that needs to be done is sanded and a clear coat? Do you know what that part is called that is faded? Also the other picture is it window trim or weatherstrip having trouble finding them.

It is a Window trim/ Weatherstrip together I believe. You may want to try a Chevy Dealer for that. As for the plastic trim on the sides of the rear window, Have you ever waxed it? Looks like it has had a lot of sun explorsure. Best bet is a junkyard for that or sand it down till its smooth, tape up the area around it and spray it satin Black in a few thin coats. Good Luck

I would remove them for any painting.

I don't see any real problem with the bottom window trim piece.

Im going to go take off the back tire and take the tire hatch off and sand that down and paint it. So ill be back soon

More than likely plastic screws.

Just be careful.

Sanding, cleaning and a couple coats of gloss black and clear code and they will be as good as new.

You shouldn't have to remove the tire hatch.

Can't you access the screws from the side that faded trim piece?

I think he is also painting the spare tire carrier, which is why he removed it.

If you are going to pull off the trim piece, let us know how it went and throw up some pics if you can of how it attaches. I had my rear tire carrier re-painted back in the fall at a local dealer and I asked them why the rear trim was faded/cracking the way it was. They told me it was a combination of the sun, acid rain (the Toronto air we breath) and high speed polishing which wore down the clear coat. They said they had many problems with vehicles they polished with the air buffer and it would eat the clear coat right off them. I also asked them about repainting them and they said they could not get paint to adhere well to them and usually ended up replacing the trim. I would be interested to know how it goes as I was thinking of repainting mine when the weather gets warmer, but I was thinking of doing it on the vehicle and masking everything.

yes i am painting the spare tirer carrier too. I have to wait till this weather gets warmer its 50 but just have a windchill making it really cold. I took the 2 screws out of the window it got looser but didnt come off could find anything else to unscrew

You should do both sides so it is even.

I took the 2 screws out of the window it got looser but didnt come off could find anything else to unscrew

So it sounds as though you got the trim off. Were there any tricks, special clips on the back, etc., that could help everyone else out?

Did i use the wrong clear coat? I bought crystal clear, clear coat? Should i have got a high gloss one? To make it more shiny. On my other one the i did not need to paint i could see my reflection in it. This one i cant

You didn't need to clear coat it at all, all you ever need to do on the black exterior pieces is to use blue cutting gel till it's dull, then use 3M Foam pad finisher on a buffer or rag till its shined...It restores it back to new..We've done this on many of the winburned pieces on various trucks and it's come out perfect every time.

did u see the pictures it was a rough surface ? i had to be sanded

rlith
02-12-2005, 10:54 AM
Yes, I saw the pics... Very windburned... And even with sanding, (if you have a gouge) 2000 grit wet sanding then using the blue cutter then 3m foam pad finisher would achieve the same thing.

You do both of them. Not one, both.

You can NEVER match them up perfectly.
