steering bump

I've finished searching the forum with no avail. I do remember reading about people experienceing bumps or tough spots in their XJ's steering.

Could anyone point me to those threads or refresh my memory?

by "tough spots" do you mean it catches or is hard turning as you turn the steering wheel when the front wheels are in a certain position??

If the hard spot is when the front wheels are straight ahead, the steering box is adjusted too tight.

If the front wheels are pointed in another direction, a bind in the linkage is a possibility. Hard to tell unless you know where the front wheels are pointed when the bind happens.

yup, there's one tough spot with every rev of the steering wheel, left or right. It's just to the right of 'center' if I were driving down the highway. It's not so much of a bind than additional force required to push through it, and then it's back to normal.

Has anyone adjusted the steering box recently??


Check the straight ahead position of the steering wheel by turning the wheels all the way to the left. Now count the number of turns and the part turn required to move the wheels all the way to the right. Divide that number by two and turn the wheel back exactly that that far. Now drive forward. you should be driving straight ahead and not drifting to the left or right.

Is this steering wheel position have the SW spokes straight across??

Where is the hard spot from this SW wheel position??

Also

Have someone slowly turn the SW wheel back and forth thru the binding while you look under and observe the linkage closely for any interference.

If none, jack up the front axle and turn the wheels side to side to see if the effort thru the hard spot changes.
