Sr20det question

So i talked to one of the guys at smog about SR's. He said they are highly illegal and blah blah blah. I asked what would happen if i take it in and he said even if it passes the smog part, it will fail visual.
My question for you guys is, what exactly is it that makes them fail on visual? What would happen if i shaved the part that said "intercooled turbo" off the valve cover, and put a huge heat shield to help cover the turbo and manifold? I really would like to do an SR swap, but dont want to have problems when it comes to emissions. Any "legel" info about the smog checks and everything would be great.

its impossible to find a KA with low engine miles, not just around here, anywhere. And with my dad being a mechanic, the swap isnt a problem. We can do the whole swap without paying for any installation fee's, so im seeing this as a better idea than trying to find a KA with less than 120,XXX miles. I would rather not turbo something with that many miles on it.

That engine was not offered in the USDM 240sx.
Bah, miles. What do they matter?

your joking right nissanfanatic? you think im a newb around here? shit, i know it wasnt available for usdm SX. Miles matter for reliability and the fact that i wont know the way the engine was kept in the past (synthetic oil changes, tune ups, how it was driven, such)

That is what makes them fail visual. They know what engine comes in the car. And they know what it looks like.
A simple compression test along with possibly a leakdown test will determine the condition of the engine. And from there, its up to you how long it lasts after that.

Please don't start that stuff. I never base anyone's ability on thier expirience. Ability and expirience are two different things. How is it that I can go from knowing 1/2 as much as a 30 year mechanic around here to knowing twice as much in one year? Desire to know.

first of all they look at the engine code....fail
second, i think the a heat shield would look pretty suspicous...
third, they say that you wont pass without the egr box (which comes out when you make the sr swap.)
I also live in CA. people i know with illegal cars just go to the ghetto and post up a bribe. no problem

Im not starting anything, its just you should at least have an idea of who i am, since i pretty much only stay in the 240/forced induction forum on AF. and the knowing about sr20det not in USDM should be a given for anyone around here.

idk, im all mixed up. At first i wanted to do an sr swap. Then i quickly wanted to stick with the KA, and now im still kinda thinking about the SR. But today, after watching the ultimateka video, my memory is refreshed and now i would like to stick with the KA again.lol. How many miles are on your KA nissanfanatic?

it says in his sig, over 135,000 miles.. and mileage doesn't matter to a certain extent.. he's right in that if compression is good then thats most of the battle.. i've noticed more lifter problems that people are talking about, which may only happen in 50% of the 150,000 mile ka24de's.. and thats another part of the battle.. then there's other smaller stuff like timing chain..
my ka has less milage than nissanfanatic's and i plan on turboing it unless the compression average is less than 175.. if it IS less than 175 then i'm going to renewed import for a 2 year old ka for $600

whoa, $600 for a 2 year old ka? is there a website. My dad (mechanic) said hes going to definatly comp. check the engine before i get my 240 though. What else is there to look at for reliability when buying a KA?

vacuum leaks, gasket leaks.. which i think a leakdown would find (right??)

i dont know if they're actually 2 years old, but they have an average of 40,000 kilometers on them.. all compression tested and ready to go.. its a company in calgary, Alberta... i'm gonna go see them in the summer cause i want an engine from them..

i dont know about any of the other engines.. call the guy.. his name is terry.. he probably won't remember me so don't me if you don't want to.. (i called and asked about a ka24de from ottawa, he MIGHT rememeber but probably not).. i don't remember who it is on here that lives in calgary (who was it logik??) but you could get him to go check the place out and see whats goin on.. as far as i know, the guy has 100% rating on ebay.. thats how i found him
nevermind he has a piss poor rating.. 96.7.. search for him on ebay and read the feedback if you want..

I would check the compression. The pistons take the most stress so they would be the first to go. Unless you have oil starvation issues in which case you should listen for any weird noises when test driving. It would be nice to check oil pressure. But usually if compression checks out and the car drives well, the engine is in good shape.

unless you get some anal bum who dots every i and crosses every t.. i'd talk to some of the tuner shops around there and see what people have done.. they may not support it but chances are someone's gonna know who to talk to and where to get shit done

Or you could just swap the KA back in for the inspection. Little hassle, but some things require a hassle.
