can anybody remember (specifically) what problems there were with pre-1987 700r4s? I will be buying one and I'm wondering if it will be a problem even though I am rebuilding it and putting a new servos, govenor, clutches, etc. into it.

by "problem" I think he means the differences between pre-87 and post-87.

no... don't want to know the differences, I want to know the problems. Apparently GM had significant reliability problems with the 700r4 before they redid it in 1987. The 700r4 used to be a "problematic" transmission.

ha.. What wasnt wrong with them would be a shorter list..
if you have a pre-87 then you need to either get a 10 vane upgrade kit for your pump or just get a 10 vane pump. if you have a 84 or
earlier, get a newer input shaft - they are beefier. also change the front & rear sprags to the new design..
Other than that, a good rebuilt with the right parts and you'l have a solid tranny! Use kevlar clutches, covette servos, Good stuff! it'l make one hell of a tranny that'l hold a lot of power

I can find out exactly what the problem was if you really need it, but basically they had some trouble with the oiling system I think. The newer ones just had an improved oiling pump or something and were more durable.
