anyone know of an intake upgrade that is not very costly and will still increase the air flow and hp, i have an 85 fiero gt all stock

i took off my stock 85gt intake boot and replaced it with one of an 86gt. its alot less retrictive and a k&n filter. or you could just buy/make a intake tube and put a cone filter under the engine vent.

I would stay away from the so called "cold air intakes". Even though there is a vent right above the filter, it is still really hot in there. Sucking cold air from outside the car is best. K&N filter would be the best and simplest way to increase air to the intake. You can also make your own tube to go from the intake vent on the side of the car to the air filter canister. The big movie camera looking box is a little restrictive.

yeah the k&n helps alot. made a setup like you see on some of the newer cars. they use a cone filter in a housing. more inline than the can on fiero. imo it should be less restrictive.

Some folks on the Fiero racing mailing list (or maybe the yahoo group? I forget..) put a stock 2.8 V6 on an engine dyno. They did a run with no intake, and a run with the complete Fiero intake system. There was no difference in performance. On a modified engine that needs to flow more air you may find it somewhat restrictive, though.
If you really want to replace the intake anyway, find an aftermarket "cold air" intake for an 88-91 Honda CRX. You'll want the "short ram" type. Using that will place the cone filter right behind the stock intake opening so it still sucks in cold air.
There's some more info and discussion on it here if you're interested:

Obviously if the engine performed the same with no intake on it a K&N filter isn't going to be worth anything as far as performance goes, but there are still some benefits. You'll never have to buy another air filter since you can just clean it, and it is also immune to moisture. Those benefits can be worth the cost even without a performance gain.

Save up for the trueleo intake. They said it increased hp and it flows enough to support 300hp. The redline also went upto 6500 on a stock 2.8.

The above e-mail address is for Darrell Morse in Minnesota.

He modifies the stock throttle body by boring it out to 57mm.

He does good work is reliable and his prices are pretty reasonable too.

Just drop him a line with any questions.

port the intake yourself because it is easy. I am in the prcess right now. Not hard at all and it doesn't take a long at all if you have the right bit. The throttle body is up to you. But don't buy a ported intake for $350 when if you put 275 more with it you could have the trueleo intake which is far superior.
