Why? I'm going to be starting one in the not too distant future, what problems have you encountered? - Mark

What kits give me problem? The ones that doesn`t cooperate during the building process! They tend to loose parts( I had it 5 minutes ago!..) or the ones were the body has paint-allergy( paintjob screws up ..) and so on..

In short, every kit/buildup has some problems on the way from the opened box to the displaycase :)

Hey,

Um...can't remember specificly, but fiddly front suspentions are a bitch. Getting glass to stay put w.o falling out or smearing it up wiht glue or paint.

-Rear cowl doesn't fit
-Monocoque is divided into two parts, which means u have to paint the seat, glue it in place then paint the exterior with the seat masked. Makes painting a hell of a job.
-2 tone paint scheme, masking of body is quite hard with irregular pattern.
-Fragile decals

Maybe it's just I'm not good enough to build the kit but I've built the Ferrari F2001 and it's just fine.

Thanks for the heads up on the Williams. I built the Ferrari F2001 too and thought it was a beautiful kit, the Williams kit parts look impressive too. Since I'll be doing the Williams for an article I guess I'll pass on any work arounds I find... - Mark

well beside the 2 tone paint problem (I found it easy since they give decal to go over the joint line) I got the same problems as you.

Oh, c'mon. Tamiya kits are works of art compared to some poorly done resin kits.
I have TKM's Lincoln Mk.VIII, and well...it's like this:

It's faster to scratchbuild it instead of fixing this model.

Geez, it looks to have come from the behind of a very sick man!!:(

Yikes, that TKM Lincoln will take some beating on the worst possible kit list. Fashioning a model with a rock and chisel would require less work!

Oh my, that is absurdly crude...

I think that's the worst kit I've ever seen!!!

I'd like to see one of the top modellers on this forum have a go at it and see if they can make something which resembles a car!!

I've got a 1948 Tucker cast similarly and of like quality I've been tinkering with over the years. Instead of resin, it was cast in Bondo and all there is is a body with molded in windows, lights etc. Someday I'll finish it... - Mark

Ugh I've seen some bad resin bodies but that Lincoln takes the cake. People still slush-cast? Kudos for trying to release something popular, but could've used a bit more work. What a shame.

OMG..!! That is so bad, how can anyone even get a decent looking model out of that, nevermind a show winner..!!

I've never seen a model so rough before..!! Good luck to anyone who attempts to build that..!!

Regarding that Tamiya 1:20 Williams, y'all -

The cowl will fit. It's just warped. All you need to do is heat water to boiling, pull it off the burner, submerge the cowl for 2-5 seconds, and bend it back into shape (before painting, naturally - you may have to adjust the assembly sequence accordingly).

Mine fit like a glove after a few minutes of tweaking.

Chuck,
Were there any other areas on the Williams you came across that needed extra attention? - Mark

Not too many, Mark. Yes, the monocoque is split in two, but the fit is so precise that if you make a glue bead along the seam as the instructions suggest, you will actually fill it. I also found that the nose cone has a nice press fit once the monocoque is together.

The only parts that really bugged me were the front uprights; their fit at the front suspension arm pivots is a bit loose, making for wobbly steering poses. Otherwise, it's reasonably free of temperament as I recall...

Thanks Chuck,
I'll get the kit out today and make some notes for future assembly... - Mark
