Highway Vibration

at about 120-130/km an hr, i get alot of vibration everywhere. what the hell is this?

Super sharp truck!Those tires are sweet looking,awsome for traction,but will probably never ride smooth at high speeds.At that speed it almost has to be tire balance.Key is rotation,knobby tires are notorious for cupping on the front what with all the turning and cornering.If you rotate and balance about every 5-6,000 miles with a good alignment those will probably be just fine.

it is probably the tire balance, i have bfg mt 315/75 16's and they ride great on the highway but tend to throw the weights, check the balance rotate and align, make sure they check the ride hieght

if it's just a tire balance i can live with that...i'm due for my first one in about 1000 km. the m/t's are great though, wouldn't have anything else on now.

I have the BFG MT's on my silverado as well and they are a pig for the weights. Two of the tires wanted 10oz's to balance but by law here they are only allowed to put on 6. Even at 160 km/h there is no vibration. I think it is possible that one of your rims may have slung a weight, did the shop that balanced them use the right weights ? When i boght my 2000 i got to keep these tires becuase they were only 7 months old and they did not want to leave the over sized tires on my old truck (which i traded in for the 2000) and they did not use the proper weights. I'll tell ya , when you are passing someone @ 120 km/h and one of those weights fly off , it sure scares the shit outta ya.

Remember as a tire wears it will change the balancing. The first 1/2 to 2/3 of an aggressive tire such as the BFG MT will wear faster than the last 1/2 to 1/3 (just like a pencil eraser) It is possible that they ARE balanced right but just need to be done again or a weight fell off, and as for an alignment i would say no unless you are having problems with the truck pulling or wandering.

BFG recommends rotating these tires every 10,000 km...do you do yours sooner?

Well i have approx 40,000 km on them now and ummmm :rolleyes: i have now rotated them yet. :eek: No noticable wear difference between them other than a heavy right foot :biggrin:

If the tire thing doesn't work. try rotating your driveshaft 180 Degrees. I't worked for me on my Silverado.

I hope you find a solution because me and numerous other Silverado Owners are experiencing the same problem and yet to find a solution.

Welcome to the NBS! I've heard (and felt) quite a few complaints on the 03+ trucks, and it always comes back to "it's a truck, get used to it". Dealer took it on a ride and shrugged, said it felt fine. Yeah right. My coffee is flying all over the place at 65 mph.

It's not pretty.

To twentypints- The vibration is quite difinitive after 50 MPH.
It remains constant up to 80 MPH. I am afraid to go faster than 80 MPH.

There is a product called Equal (sp?) that is put in semi tires. It's a powder that keeps the tires balanced perfectly at all times. Dunno how it works at city speeds where it isn't slung to the outside tho. I don't know how much it costs, but I'm going to try to find some for my next set of tires.

I've got an 03 I bought a few weeks ago. It has BFG 315/75R16. It has a bad vibration between 45 and 55. It is smoth as glas above or below that. I had chalked it to the tires but see others are having the same problem. I have balanced the tires twice since I've gotten the truck and it is a bit better. I do have some flat spots on my tires because you can stick a small flathead screwdriver in the little slits on the outer edge of the tire and get varying depths all around.

Hopefully a new set of tires will help especially if I keep them balanced and rotated. I'll live with the vibration for a while cause I've got a good bit of tread left on these puppies.
