Gear box only turning Left hand wheel

After changing the engine, and re-connecting the gearbox, we tried to turn the enging over in gear, and only the left hand wheel turns. When turning either driveshaft both will turn, but don't turnover the engine. It's a 1995 1600 16v 5-speed manual escort.
