Problem with '97 Mitsubishi Galant

My daughter just bought a '97 Galant..While they were driving it, the alternator belt broke...My husband replaced the belt but when he went to start it, it wouldn't start...He thought that it may be the starter so it was replaced and the same thing happened. He says that it sounds like the starter isn't engaging the flywheel.. He turned the flywheel by hand and felt to see if it felt damaged at all and said that it didn't feel like there were any broken teeth or anything...It was running fine until the belt broke...My husband has worked on cars for years and has never come across this problem but he's more use to working on older model cars....Any ideas???
