Newbie Hello - Oil Change question?

Hi All,

I'm new to the miata, as you can see in my signature I've recently acquired a 2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5 (MSMif that's OK).

I am a regular on the same forum under the Isuzu Rodeo section, great guys there! I hope to find the same here! I know of miata.net forum, good stuff but can't discuss anything about trades, I don't care for that.

I thought maybe some of you regulars could introduce yourself, offer any insights, and help with my first question:

I'm at 1200 miles, thinking of a first oil change, anything particular on these roadsters to be aware of I've heard of people ordering "miata filters", are special filters required. Any recommendations on oil and oil filters would be appreciated, as woud any tips that might help!

My understanding is the Miata filter has a valve often not on "standard" oil filters. They are also very well constructed and available on line for about seven dollars.

I plan to use these Miata filters, just because it's basically cheap insurance to avoid more expensive problems down the road.

I need help getting to the filter. I've read about the turn wheel and reach in approach, but, duuuh, can't see it. I mean, I can se the filter, but can't see how to get at it readily, or get a oil wrench on it.

any help? maybe a pic or two? I really want to do my own OC, but gotta figure out how! I do it on my rodeo, but, the engine compratment looks like a 57 chevy in comparison to the miata.

any tip on where to get those filters? maybe rosenthal motors I here good prices there?

I've yet to look for the oil drain plug, is it fairly obvious?

well, they do sell relocation kits for the Miata, with and without an oil cooler. as for the filters, I use the Purolator Pure 1 from the Millenia/929 available at advance auto parts. it's the same mounting seal but bigger capacity. I use it on my turbo Miata and have had no problems.

Thanks, i'm trying to fight the mainstream thinking of $7 OEM filters are best, not sure what I'll do, appreciate the advice.
