my friends and i ordered pizza during half-time and i of course volunteered to go and pick it up...there was almost no one on the road and i was just cruising along at 40MPH...There were only 3 cars at the stoplight and i pulled up beside this nice looking BMW 850 CsA...I wasnt sure if it was the V8 or V12 Model but i couldnt resist trying to get it to come out to play...The driver looked pretty young and grinned slightly before the light turned green
I floored it and got maybe 5-8 feet before i heard the roar of his engine as he flew past me......sealing my fate as i saw his tailights dissapear about a 1/4 mile down the road bend...
Notes:Got killed by an old BMW 8-series.
slowly learning not to pick on anything above my league

HAHA, your the Super-Bowl-Half-Time-Bitch! J/P.
Ah, usually when I want to hear the sound of something, let's say a Trans Am, I tempt it just to hear it go by. That's about the only way I do it too. Don't feel bad. Good death. L8...

AFAIKL
850 = 5.0 liter V12
840 = 4.0 liter V8
BMW and Mercedes use the last digits to show engine displacement. The first digit is a chasis number. 8 is bigger than the 7 series which is bigger than the 5 which is bigger than the 3 :)
... and yes, it is always a pleasure watching them take off into the dust. I always enjoy how they do not adjust stance much when they accelerate from a roll. They stay pretty damn level and just rocket off. ;)

That's not true. Mercedes S600, not 0.0 liter engine. For Mercedes displacement is the first two digits, and for BMW it's the last two digits.

I must ask....How could of BMW used a V12 rated at a measly 300HP, thats kinda weak considering a V12 should of at least have 450+HP..And also not to mention that both 8-series weigh over 4000lbs...Iam not saying thier slow POS's because they got nice styling and iam sure they can both hit 60MPH in under 6s...But its a wild toss up to have the V8 model which has the norm 275HP thats typical in most V8's rather than the V12 which is underpowered

thats about to change. For example the 1 series and 2 series are the same chassis but the 1 are sedans, 2 are coupes.

The 12cilender prolly has a ton more torque, and has a much bigger powerband...

Big displacement doesn't always mean big horsepower. My favorite example, the 77ish 400sbc that had like 150hp.

Correct, however, in a BMW they would not have the v8 only a fraction slower...Why? The 12 would burn more gas and be worthless

I love the old 8 series, damned good looking cars...unfortunately they didn't sell too well and they died quickly...the good new is, there are some V12 examples that can be had for under 20 grand...it's one hell of a deal if you ask me, considering new, the car went for 90+K.

yeah whose big-block and small-block V8's of the 70's and 80's were really lackluster in performance.....They probally had loads of torque to compensate for such low HP figures

My 425 Caddy has 180 HP and 320 lb/ft torque.
It can break the tires loose wicked easily. But it doesn't go very fast ^^
And detroit. The number of cylinders has nothing to do with the power, Ferrari made a v12 rated at 275 HP....Lol.

From mid 70s+ car performance went down. Stupid emissions/gas shortages. Back then my uncle had a '57 bel air that got 'two blocks to a gallon'.

my friends dad has a 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans AM with the 400CI engine and when it was stock he said it had around 185HP and over 320 foot/lbs of torque..He then turned it into a street legal drag car and now the beast runs at least low 11's high 10's.....Id imagine it was a bad time period for performance cars...Ive even heard stories that Ford didnt even put a V8 into the GT models and instead used a Turbocharged 4-cyl or an I-6 iam not to sure...

good show jekyllandhyde, it was a 840, but the engine was a 4.5L v8. got me mixed up, not to mention the new v8 bimmers are 45s. it is, in fact, the 840Ci

My friend had a 1986 Pontiac Parisianne station wagon with a 305 (about 5 liters) and it made less than 200hp, if I do recall. Seems like BMW did pretty well getting 275 out of that 4.5 liter motor in 1990. Also, I do believe the torque specs are higher than the horsepower for both those engines. I don't know how you deduce that a v-12 should automatically make 450hp+, that's totally ludicrious and not based in any sort of quantitative information. The engines were designed to have a nice, wide power band for driving on the streets, not to be strung-out race car engines. There may be a reason or two a 30,000 mile ferrari is considered high-milage, while there are v-8 and v-12 model BMW's running well into the 200k range.

For Mercedes displacement is the first two digits, and for BMW it's the last two digits.not always. my cousin's got a 98 BMW 540i and it's a 4.4 liter V8, not a 4.0. Also the 2000 BMW 323ci's are 2.5L and the mercedes C230's and 240's are actually 2.6L.
