Hello,
I need to put my cd player in my 93 yota pickup. I know that you have to take off the glove box, but I can't get it off. I've taken out all of the screws that I can see, but yet it still won't come out. Any suggestions?

Hey yoterbanger,

I just installed a Pioneer CD player in my 93 pickup, and you have to almost take apart the entire "under" dashboard in order to do it. If you have the Chilton Toyota book, it shows an exploded view of the Instrument Panel in section 10-6. (I will post a scan of the diagram later; I was actually going to scan you a copy when I found out my [old] scanner is not compatible w/Windows XP, which I just upgraded to....)

Anyway, this is what you need to do, with just my words:

1.) Remove the Instrument Lower Center Cover, which is just in front of
your gear shift. There are two plastic brads on either side; use a flat-head screwdriver and be careful not to break any.
2.) Remove the Glove Box and the entire panel it's attached to. There is a 10mm bolt in the very bottom right corner of this panel, as well as 4 screws (3 on the top, and one on the lower right-hand corner). Your right 4" speaker will be in here, so make sure you disconnect it before pulling it completely off.
3.) Remove the Lower Finish No. 1 panel, which is the panel directly under the steering column. This panel also has 4 screws, as well as another 10mm bolt on the bottom left-hand corner. Your left 4" speaker is in here, so disconnet it, as well. You'll also need to remove the hood latch by removing the two screws which attach the handle to this panel, and pulling it off the panel.
4.) Remove the Lower Center Finish, which is just above the Instrument Lower Center Cover in #1. You'll have to remove the knobs on the heater control and unplug the cigarette lighter and clock. The panel that identifies the heater control settings will pop off. The only screw in this panel is the top left-hand screw you already removed for the Glove Box.
5.) The Key Cylinder Cover might pop off; just set it aside to put back during re-installation.
6.) Now you can remove the old radio and extra storage compartment directly under it by removing the 4 screws which hold the bracket in place.

Are you replacing the stock radio? I did, and the wire colors are all different than the new CD player. I did come across a website that has some information that will probably help you in your re-wiring:

http://tomclegg.net/toyotastereo

Make sure you scroll down to the first posting in "Feedback," as it is from a dude in California who replaced his stock radio w/ a new CD player and needed help with the wire colors and what they do. I found it VERY helpful.

I got my CD player installed, although now my park (running) lights don't work and the fuse keeps blowing every time I turn them on. I think my installation of my player messed with the circuit a bit. If you have the same problem, contact me and I will let you know what I find out about it.

Remember that the removal order of the items I mentioned above are critical when putting it all back together, as almost all the panels share screws....

Hope this helps, and good luck!

The panels also use snap locks so you might have to do a little pulling to get it apart. Just don't yank hard enough to break it!! autozone.com has a repair guide section for your vehicle. I was going to give you the link but it's down right now!!

This happened to me only thigns didnt work out, you might have to do this i'm not sure though, it's another idea since the fuses blow and such...

(from an old thread)
"I don't know if this is just because mine is an SR5 and the rear speakers are different. When we hooked up the cords to do a test before mounting it the rear speakers would not get sound. they would from the stock radio, but not the cd deck, or another source i brought out. We tested my wiring harness with other speakers...perfect. Hmm, so we ripped out the back speakers and there is a circuit board behind them, the wire from the head unit goes into the board, then into the speaker. I'm guessing its a system of capacitors sort of like a mini amp. i left that in there and just ran new wire from the cd player to the speakers, good now!
So yeah, it was hell, but its worth it, hopefully you get this before having to go through what i did. good luck."

That might have something to do with your fuses blowing, but who knows, it's an idea atleast. Good luck m8.

Hey m8, thanks for the suggest. I actually figured out what was blowing my fuse; the green wire that came from the original radio plug was somehow connected to the tail lights. I disconnected this green wire from the new CD player's black ground, and then replaced the blown fuse. Lo and behold, the tail lights worked! And, while they were on, I touched the bare end of the green wire to the metal of the truck, and [the fuse] immediately blew. So, I "amputated" the green wire's bare end, and replaced everything. Now everything except the light behind the heater control works!

Oh well, at least the CD player and tail lights work. I replaced the stock 4" speakers with new Pioneer speakers, and then placed Pioneer 6x9's in the doors, and it sounds killer!

I just hope yoterbanger was able to get the CD player in their 93 OK....

I've finally got everything in and working! I installed a Pioneer CD player and 6x9's in my 93. I also replaced the stock 4" with 100 watt Pioneer 4" that add some great high end to the 6x9's in the doors. Check out this website for the pics of my work:

How did you get it to work again? Mine have been out for quite a while after putting my CD player in, i just figured i bumped something back there.

Sorry, I meant everything BUT the light behind my heater controls! I'm not that worried about it just yet, mostly because our days will be getting longer here soon (summer!), and I've been driving a 92 and 93 for the past 5 years, so I have the settings memorized. In my 93 it's actually been flickering ever since I bought the truck, and I figured the bulb needs to be replaced. Although I'm not too sure HOW to replace the bulb, but I think it just involves ripping everything out again, which I'm not TOO excited to do just yet!

Let me know if you get yours fixed, and how you do it....

Oh ok, I thought in your post below you meant that you got that working too when you said "everything in and working". I've got them memorized too, but it would be nice to have another glow there instead of just the CD player face. Oh well. If I ever get around to ripping up my dashboard again I'll take a look and see what I can find. I had already tryed to get into the heater light area but it's all behind a big clear plastic thing to spread the light out. I don't have a Hayne's manual either, I might go see if I can pull one out of a library. I'll let you know if I find something out.
