My GTP caught on FIRE

Hello everyone -

I own a 1999 GTP and last Friday while the car was in park but running the engine sputtered, died and then caught on fire. Unfortunately the damage is unrepairable and I am extremely disappointed. I am turning to the faithful message boards because no one can offer me an explanation on why my car just started on fire....

Has anyone experienced or heard of engine fires in the GTP for no reason?

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can sell my car to someone who has the time and/or money to fix it? The body and interior are in excellent condition. I have the leather, heated driver seat, moonroof, bose sound system and power everything. What a waste!

Thanks for any information in advance!

To start with, I'm sorry to hear about your car. We take a lot of time, and ourselfs into our cars.
Fire deptment has no ideas where it started? Insured? Send some pictures of the car (inside). Have a guy looking for seats.

Do you not have insurance??If the car is not paid for they will pay the car off and you will recieve the rest of the money thats not owed on the car.

I own a 1997 Grand Prix GTP. I went into Wal-Mart Monday 2/28/2005. When I came out the fire dept was there and my car was destroyed underthe hood. I have not been able to get answers either.

Sorry about the bad luck, but I`ll tell yeah, right now I wish the ol`lady`s piece would burn to the ground, heck it`s overheating, just can`t get it to a flashpoint!!!

Maybe your putting the gas in the wrong spot.

:banghead: I am sorry to hear about such a tradegy to a sweet car, I have heard about remote car starters doing this and possibly leaking fuel rail or injector. I say keep the car and fix it up slowly.

Funny you should mention that...

I was just going to suggest that if a remote starter was installed, and the installer went to the injectors for a tach signal, then if that tach wire were to ground out somehow, the injector would fill your engine with gas. Not good...

Hey there, My wife had almost the exact thing happen to her as Tee1 did. This happened on 24 mar 05, she picked up the car at the body shop and went to get some groceries, not 5 minuts away. She parked the car, went in and when she got to the check out 10 mins later she looked out the window to see the fire dept putting out the car. Everything under the hood was burned up. I have pics but not here as I am visiting out of town right now. Since this has happened only a few days ago we have not received any answers either. But I will post the findings when I get some answers. The leaky fuel rail, and the remote starter (there is one installed) theories make some sense, but what could have sparked it off? The engine wasn't even at operating temp yet. Any other ideas from others would be great, thanks, Mike.

The SAME type of thing just happened to my Pontiac 1999 Grand Prix GTP. It was having various electrical problems (different power windows getting stuck and not going down, key getting stuck in ignition till it timed out and released it, etc) but nothing major. Car was running perfect, as well as had all the periodic maintenence on it. I came home last Tuesday night, parked it and turned it off to go inside my house. 10 minutes later, my neighbor knocked on my door in a panic to let me know that my car was on fire. It appears the fire started in the engine area, cuz thats where the major burn marks on my hood are. The fire consumed the entire engine compartment and now the car is a complete loss. Funny thing though is that everything behind the firewall (seats, tires, doors, interior, etc. are fine!!) My insurance co came out to the salvage lot to look at it and totalled it out. I was the original owner of this car...its like I lost a close friend.....what a bummer.

Special Viton o-rings need replacing on the GTP's fuel line connection point to the fuel rail on top of the engine under the decorative plastic cover TO PREVENT ANY MORE FIRES.[B]

Somewhere on some forums I read this and I saw a picture of a burning GTP.
This alerted me to the problem of old o-rings causing leaking gas. As others have said they and I have smelled gas when we were driving sometimes. My 97 has 160000 miles. I pulled over, pulled the cover and there was the wet spot.

The nightmare comes when you want to simply replace the special o-rings. I checked with Pontiac. They only list and have the 1 smaller viton (brownish colored) o-ring for the gas "supply" feed line, the smaller of the 2 lines. Their fix is for you to buy $175 new gas lines and spend all day replacing them from the engine to the gas tank! Thanks GM.

After searching every auto parts store around and a special rubber company this is what I found:

1. Forget Napa. They all list one 2 o-ring kit (# 2-18416) which looks wrong and may only be for the "supply" feed line.

2. While the specialty rubber company had viton o-rings, they said I needed metric sizes which they did not have.

3. SOLUTION: Go to Autozone or Carquest or any auto parts store that carries the "HELP!" line of hardware boxes. You need box #80020 O-RING assortment $7 -7.50ea. In there will be only 1 of the larger "return" line size o-ring and 2 of the "supply" feed line o-rings.

NOTE: You will need the special disconnect tool (Autozone Dorman #800-009 $4 to push in to relieve the 4-prong clip that holds the line connector on. If you try multiple screwdrivers to release the clip you will be buying a new clip (Autozone).

[B]Before you start to remove the old o-rings: You will need a bright flashlight and a o-ring removal tool. IF YOU EVEN TOUCH the first white colored o-ring - it will cut thru it like wax. Forget about finding one of those or know what it is or why there is 2 types of o-rings there. Either carefully don't touch it OR replace it with a Viton o-ring as I did. Of course I ruined the larger "return" line white o-ring (which there is only 1 in the assorted kit) so I got to make another 30 minute drive to search the city for another $7 kit! Maybe both should be replaced anyway.

I replaced them with a little saliva for lube, it was snug and NO LEAKS! Finally.

I believe eveyone with a GTP with 75000 miles or more should get these replaced to prevent any more fires. Of course GM is not going to do it the cheap way!
