Bad coil ???

I have a 1990 2500 with a 305. Just put it back together and it wouldn't start. I reset the timing (3 times). When I was turning the motor over to get #1 TDC I noticed the spark was jumping from the plug wire lead on the coil to the frame of the coil. ( I have the wire removed from this terminal )
Would this indicate a cracked coil case and/or faulty coil?
When I hooked it all up and checked for spark at the plugs I got a large spark once and then no spark at all.
I don't even get a sputter out of it when I try to start it.
