I Have A Question

I was on the interstate yesterday doing about 75 mph, and in 5th gear, and this guy comes up behind me and was messin with me. I have a slow car (95 Civic CX), and I'm just learning this whole stick shift thing. What could I have done to pass him? (He was in a 92-95 Civic DX sedan). Thanks so much guys :D

to pass him you need your engine to rev higher so you have more power so... downshift into 3rd or 4th depending on how much power you need or if your on a steep hill and your strugglin a lil bit downshift

passing him would require swapping your 8-valve head for a 16 valve one, and putting the ex intake manifold on, then you should have no problem passing a dx

Isn't it bad to downshift to third if you're going 75?
I know I need to swap some stuff, but I'm not stopping with just changing the head, I'm going for a B18 :)

the problem is a honda civic cx is 72hp, and no matter where one downshifts, it's not gonna go any faster cause it's 72 hp

Amy,just upshift all your gears at redline(you'll hear the rev limiter or stop when you think the engine is gonna blow:D )
then you'll know how fast you can go in each gear.
At 75 mph,3rd gear should be near redline,so 4th gear would be better. In my car I know 3rd gear goes up to 85 mph for example.

if you do switch out the head and intake manifold and ecu, then you can go 45 os so in 1st and 90 in second on that tranny. back it up with a turbo and you only have to shift 1 time in a streat race.

This is true, it's annoying.
Seeing as I knew I couldn't really pass him with my 72 hp, I tried to slow down, but he slowed down too
I'm going to get a small aftermarket tach, so I can know a little bit more what I'm doing.
Thanks for the help guys :)

Don't feel too bad cuz I used to have a crx HF, which is the car yours is the replacement for. I think it was only 68 hp. The one thing that was nice about that engine was almost 50 mpg I got

Hmm, well you don't need a tacho. My car doesn't have one, half the cars in my family don't. You just can listen and feel the engine.
If you are going to downshift on the freeways, then always double clutch down into a lower gear. If you just put it straight down into say 3rd, it puts ALOT of instanous force thorugh you clutch, transmission and engine.
If you match you revs to the speed (ie double clutching), then change down, it will PERFORM much better and its also better for the car.
Oh and your car should be able to handle 75miles in 3rd, i've taken my car up too 110km in 2nd (thats when it tops out :) ), thats about 70miles.

Wow, that was harsh.
I'm sure you didn't have an RSX ALL the time... Geez...
Just downshift into fourth, but do it subtle so he doesn't think you're racing. A DX will mutilate you, especially on the freeway.
And if you see a newer Integra with a shiny chrome emblem on the back and shiny alloy rims. Do NOT downshift on him... He'll pass you like your'e going in reverse.
Oh yeah and if you see IceMan messing with you, even up with him at a lite, roll down your window so he thinks he's getting a number, then tell him he's ugly and his face makes his car slow.

Eclipse's? The Eclipse in your class is the GSX or GS-T. I'd like to see you break off one of those. And I'd like to see you break off a Subaru WRX, THOSE are your class. Since when do Integra's cost 25,000$? The only Integra that costs 25,000$ is one that will do you dirty on a 1/4 mile run AND on an autocrossing event.
And don't send me private messages, people will get the wrong idea.
No my Corolla isn't fast, I made it quick, but it's not fast. If I wanted I could put 2,500$ into the engine, and break you off really good in a race and my car's total cost will be only around 17,000$ total. So if I beat your car, which cost you a pretty penny in a car that cost me a rusty dime, how does that make you look, "IceMan"
And as I've heard, rendog has a pretty healthy swap in mind. So considering his Ex already LOOKS better than your bubble-mobile, and his swap will make him pass cars like yours like you're in reverse, you don't seem to be having the upper hand do you?
Oh and maybe my car can't break you off, but my parents have a 2000 Mustang GT 5 speed that they will pass down to me as soon as it's paid off, can you break that off? Oh and I have a 1992 Integra GS in my backyard without an engine, can you say... H22?

I'm not flaming, so carrrnut don't warn me please. I'm simply trying to determine what it is that I'm debating with.
Welcome to PH, man. I had a rough time here when I barely started posting but let me give you a piece of advice... I figured out, after an amount of posts (about 60), that attitude doesn't sit well here when you're new, or when you're a veteran, whether you have 120 posts like me, or thousands like carrrnut, you don't go around starting sh!t with everyone. Just because you said you had an Acura RSX Type S earlier, didn't give you any king rights over some girl's CX, or over rendog's Ex, I've seen CX's with engines under the hood, and polyurethane on the body that look pretty badass. Just like I've seen Ex's that have beautiful body work done to them, and Greddy turbo kits on them running mid 13's all day on street tires.
Now the Trans Am is a badass car, and so is the RSX, but they're car's, and we're people. We're people who love our cars and love cars in general, so don't mix attitude with the two, because when you talk trash about a person's car, when they're an enthusiast, you're stepping knee-deep in sh!t that you can't pull yourself out of.

Okay BlkCamaroSS... Here's the scoop. This guy, IceMan255, talks a lot of trash. Yesturday he was putting down a lot of people's cars, but here's the deal, yesturday in his sig it said "2002 RSX Type S" and he only had like 5 posts....
And now today he's still talking trash but as you can see, in his sig this time it says, "2001 Trans am RAM AIR"
So we're wondering if he really has that car. So we want you to ask him questions that only an owner of a F-body car, as badass as yours, could answer.

Well, you could start with questions like,
What is the difference between an LS1 and an LT1? and which do you have in a 2001 TA?
What gears come stock in the rearend of a 2001 TA?
What styling cues make the differences between a Formula and a TA?
What does SLP make the Firehawk from, a Formula or a TA?
What year did SLP produce the first Firehawk, and how many were made?
Some of those are harder than others, while some of those are gimmes...
See if he responds...
Note: Blackbird01 is much more mechanically inclined than I. Being that answers to these can be found readily online, and the fact that I have an SS, he may be able to ask more Pontiac oriented questions...just a thought.

I'm gonna guess....
1) LT1 is the Corvette tuned engine and LS1 is the Z28/Formula spec tuned to 305 horses rather than 345 like the LT1, I don't know the exact things that are different between the motors....
2) 3.55?
3)The Formula doesn't have the ram air scoop and doesn't the Trans Am have fog lights rather than just those little circle parking lights. Aren't the rims different too?
4) The Firehawk comes from a Firebird
5) The first Firehawk was a 94, well I remember a 94 and it was the first one I saw, so I'm guessing that was the first year.

LT1 is the older Fbody motor, not the vette tuned.
no idea about the gears
formula doesnt have the raised rear spoiler for one i think. hood maybe is another difference
SLP makes the firehawk from i dunno a TA
i know the first one was before 94 since they made Firehawks in the pre94 bodystyle

Answers:
1. The LT1 engine was used in 93-97 Camaros, C4 Corvettes, and 94-96 Impalas. This was a strong engine, but the precursor to the LS1. The only thing the two motors have in common are the connecting rod bearings and the roller hydraulic lifters. In a 2001 TA would be an LS1. LT1's are fast and sound awesome, while LS1's are faster and just sound good.
2. Stock gears on a 2001 TA are 3.23's, at least for a six speed.
3. A Trans Am has the mid-height wing, as well as the ground effect package that includes the side skirts and the rear bumper, an different front end. A Formula is a much more stream lined design, with the minimalist wing out back. No difference in engines between the two models.
4. SLP makes the Firehawk from both the Trans Am and the Formula. The owner-to-be has to specify which one he wants it built from when ordering the car. Again, only subtle differences in final look of the Firehawk between the two origins.
5. The first firehawk was built in 1992. 27 were ordered, but only 25 were built (21 red, 1 aqua, 1 white, 1 blue, 1 green).
