After the light goes off does the truck start or do you have to use starter fluid. I had to have the same problem fixed on my truck. I'm not sure how much the part was but the total bill was like 500......

The light may be burned out, but more likely you have a glow plug or two that are bad. The glow plug controller/relay parts are VERY durable, I have replaced ONE relay and ZERO controllers since the early '90s when the updated units were retrofitted to our fleet.
To check the glow plugs, use a test light, connect the alligator end to the POSITIVE battery post or other power lead, and remove all the glow plug connectors. Touch the end of the test light to each plug tip, if the light does NOT light, that plug is bad. It only takes two bad plugs to get a no start, and IF you used ether, it is likely ALL the plugs are bad because ether will cause the tips to be blown off rendering the plug useless.
Alternatively, you can use an ohm meter, and check for continuoty from ground to each plug tip, the resistance must be lower than 5 ohms.
