Speaker Questions

I have a 1996 240sx SE and it has the six speaker system and supposedly supports 160 watts max as it says on www.socal240sx.org and i was wondering is that 160 watts to each speaker or 160 all together b/c i want to buy some speakers for my car and i want to get the best i can without havein to buy an amp... would speakers rated at around 160 max be best or is there somethin else i should look at... is it 160 split up b/n the speakers or 160 to each?

It's 160 total. If you get good speakers, you won't hear much of a difference without an amp.

thats 160 in total.. i'm sure you have tweeters, 3" and maybe 6.5" or somethin like that.. if you want to put out more power, get rid of those speakers, get some 6X9 two-ways and put them in your doors.. then you can throw maybe some 3" in the rear to even the sound out.. i have 6.5" in my doors with a new deck and its great. i'm not a huge fan of deafening bass so i dont have a system in my car but the speakers i have are sweet enough.. oh and if you get another deck, sound quality will improve exponentially.. its night and day

Yup D bo is right. I used to work at Good Guys (electronics store) and the biggest difference to an audio system is the head unit, if your not using an amp. Speakers will play whatever comes to them, but you need a good headunit to send a better signal. And in my experience, I was in car audio department, Eclipse head units kick everyone else's ass, like Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, and definetly Sony(No Offense to any one with a Sony). Plus new headunits run min. of about 160 WATTS RMS as opposed to 160 MAX/PEAK, huge difference. Upgrade the headunit before you touch the speakers. Cuz even if you had or anyone made 1000 WATT speakers an old (yes 1996 CD player is old) cd player wouldnt send anything at full volume. Well there's my 2 cents hope that helped/explained what you should do 1st. Late.

im sorry but nakamichi owns all in head units...ever heard of them?? and yes sony sux donkey balls. 6x9's in your doors??? hellllllll no. thats horrible. why even attempt to fit 6x9 in your damn door. Just buy a component set. In all honesty components are the way to go. Im talking a true component set...like focal, cdt, ads. But those are all top quality and run over 1g a set. Or you could go crazy mad and spend 7g's on an arc audio sound system. But hey they are superior in sound quality.

I have 6x9s in my doors. But I usually listen to KA-T.FM so its all good. Every once in a while I slap some Tool or Deftones in.

ka-t.fm (24.0 on your fm dial for those of you who want to tune in) i cant wait till i get that station. I heard its quite pleasing to the ears like a symphony, but at the same time as hardcore as some tool. So i think i will like it alot.

As long as you get good reception. I hate when its staticy. Like now.

Well yeah for sure Nakamichi is the best. It's like saying that a Ka-t is better than a Honda engine. But a Ferrari engine is better than both of them. Nakamichi is out of their league.

lol, ummm...so your saying a Ferrari V12 is just bigger and not better then a Taurus engine?

OK then...this isn't sarcasm or anything but can a KA-T, no matter how modded actually put out the same power as a V12 ferrari engine??? Is that what your saying. Cuz if so then the KA-T just moved up another notch as far as most underused pieces of equipment in history. I'm just saying that's a reach, isn't it???

hahaha that vid was pretty funny.. yeah you could put out the same power as a v12.. not the same kind of torque:hp since a v12 has a ton more torque than an i4.. pretty much any decent engine can put out 1000hp if the owner had the money and desire to do it.. so your idea isn't exactly logical.. in your eyes, you seem to be saying every engine is underrated

I wouldn't necessarily say one engine is better than the other because of how much more power it makes. My analysis would include:

How long the engine lasts
How much air it flows compared to the engine size
How fuel and power efficient the engine is
Ease of matienence
Cost efficiency
Power to weight ratio(of the engine)
Maximum attainable power compared to engine size
How thermally efficient the engine is
And lastly, maximum attainable power

Those are just a few. Yes a Ferrari engine is capable of more power than a KA24DE or E and yes logik, a Taurus engine, but the Ferrari engine loses in cost efficiency. IDK how long the tend to last with proper matinence and I really don't care to know.

And FYI, the BAR/Honda F1 team had the highest horsepower engine in the circuit. Just a little food for though.
