Colorado Teens Fined for Giving Cookies to Neighbor

DURANGO, Colo. (Reuters) - A Colorado judge ordered two teen-age girls to pay about $900 for the distress a neighbor said they caused by giving her home-made cookies adorned with paper hearts.
The pair were ordered to pay $871.70 plus $39 in court costs after neighbor Wanita Renea Young, 49, filed a lawsuit complaining that the unsolicited cookies, left at her house after the girls knocked on her door, had triggered an anxiety attack that sent her to the hospital the next day.
Taylor Ostergaard, then 17, and Lindsey Jo Zellitte, 18, paid the judgment on Thursday after a small claims court ruling by La Plata County Court Judge Doug Walker, a court clerk said on Friday.
The girls baked cookies as a surprise for several of their rural Colorado neighbors on July 31 and dropped off small batches on their porches, accompanied by red or pink paper hearts and the message: "Have a great night."
The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking.
It reported that six neighbors wrote letters entered as evidence in the case thanking the girls for the cookies.
But Young said she was frightened because the two had knocked on her door at about 10:30 p.m. and run off after leaving the cookies.
She went to a hospital emergency room the next day, fearing that she had suffered a heart attack, court records said.
The judge awarded Young her medical costs, but did not award punitive damages. He said he did not think the girls had acted maliciously but that 10:30 was fairly late at night for them to be out.

I hope they do too. They probably could find a lawyer willing to do it for free, or at a reduced cost just for the publicity. They should sue for their anxiety, that the woman's lawsuit brought upon them. I'm saying this although I feel there are too many sue happy people out there and lawyers willing to perpetuate the ongoing crisis within the courts which are seriously backlogged as it is now. Having seen similar news like this before, I'm willing to bet the public will come to the aid of the girls and raise money to pay for their court award they have to pay the woman.

Well, I wasn't trying to suggest that they were out too late; but if the neighbor could press anything against them, that's the only possible one, and even then its pretty extreme, considering their age.
Although, it is kind of weird to have cookies dropped off at your door at 10:30.

That should teach all the drunk foul mouthed kids of Colorado to think twice before they ever think of making cookies and they wonder why South park (Known for depicting backward morals) was based on a small town in colorado(one of my favorite shows BTW).

Not really, but I hope those 2 girls get support from the community so they dont have to pay 900$ each.. I mean seriously, at 17 that could be their life savings. And I hope the judge realizes that he is an asshole, and the old bitch too, and that they both write apology letters to the 2 girls. This is one of the stupidest damn things ever. A poor sign for humanity.

I really think the judgement against the girls is way to harsh. True they might have been out a bit later than usual, but why ring the doorbell and run away. Why not stay there until the door opens up and present the older lady with the cookies. That part sounds fishy to me. Still its not enough to place such a high monetary judgement on them. Sometimes these judgements just don't make sense.

Ts outBased on my understanding from reading the story they had been baking the cookies for there neighborhood and seeing as this was probably time consuming based on the size of my neighborhood not knowing theres. I would also think if they were still out delivering cookies at 10:30PM they were probably running to get them all out before it got any later. I think in no way did any complaint against these girls make sense, it would be like helping a old man change his tire who was stuck on the side of the road and having him kick you in the teeth after you were done. Just my opinion though.
