Computer Chip in Keys

Is it possible to override the computer program to deactivate the chip in the keys.

I was given only one key when we purchased this vehicle.

I do not like this feature in the security because I had duplicates keys made and they only open the doors. Will not start the engine.

Sounds like you need to go back to whoever made the duplicates,if they only open the doors then they did sumthin wrong.
Autozone can duplicate keys with chips and dealers can also,but we all know that anything is cheaper than at a dealership :grinyes:

Thank you. I didn't know anyone but the dealer could make keys with a chip and I know that can't cost as much as a dealer! :smile:

The new key has to be programmed to be recognized by the Sentry key system..Only a dealership can program it,unless you have the OEM service manual

not ture most locksmiths can do the progaming. (I may know a little about this being I'm a locksmith) what year and make do you have i can look up the key.

We have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

the right key blank is Ilco #y160pt. it has to be programed with 2 keys that are already working. I see from your post you have only 1 key. so it has to be reset with a conputer. some locksmiths do have the right conputer. don't fool around if you have one key. if you lose it you have real problems. there is no way to bypass it because it works from the main conputer on the car.

what you need to do is call around locksmiths and car dealers. tell them you have only one working key. find out what it will set you back .
once you have 2 keys you can program more by yourself.

I have also seen some people cut the head of the key off. put it under the plastic by the keys switch and than just use a non computer key. You can try it by just holding the key next to the lock and see if the car will start. The key head just has to be close to the lock for it to transmit.

I will guess you mean to cut the key tip of the duplicate? I sure would hate to ruin the one and only key.

I am going to start calling around in my area today to find a locksmith.

What is the normal cost for a locksmith to duplicate the key? Have not even attempted to call the dealer for they want not just one arm but the legs and other arm when dealing with them *laughs*
