Question..... I am getting a 96 Jetta and my dad started using Mobil1 10W-30 in it at 124K miles. Is this oil good for it? It doens't really burn at all and it starts right up. But.... the thing that bugs me about it starting cold..... it will start right up but it sorta sputters a little and runs rough but if you give it like 30-45 secs, it will straighten up and idle properly for the cold weather. What is going on?

That is something common among MKIIIs, as i have noticed. I could be wrong, though. Only in cold weather that happens. If you think about it. when liquid becomes cold, it becomes more dense, or thicker. So...because of that, the engine has a harder time warming up the oil to the right operating temperature. Thats what i deduct, watson.

I am still confused. What are MKIIIs and why don't I have this problem with my 2 Toyota Camrys? They start right up but the VW acts weird. It doesn't make any sense at all. I've started my 1989 Toyota Camry with 204,800 miles in -15 farenheit and it ran like new.

Mark III is the '93 to '99.5 model cars (in US). I wouldn't consider sputtering when cold normal, nor is it an oil issue. You might want to check & clean out the throttle valve as a first attempt.
