i use mobil 1 synthetic oil 5w 30 for the engine in my truck.... I use Royal Purple Synthetics oil in my transmission, front/rear axles, i tried it once in the transfer case, but it looks like the transfer case doesn't like it that much....keeps jerking around. The only fluid that you be putting in your transfer case is GM's Auto Trac II. Anyways, sythetics promote less wear and tear, unlike the conventional stuff.... if you plan on keeping the truck, use sythetic oils, is is well worth it.... I have significantly, well to me it feels like that I get more power, when I push the gas, especially when I put Royal's oil in my rear diff.... va-va-voom....synthetic all the way.........

I have used syntech oil and other syn fluids for the past 20 years.

I swear by them. In my opinion, it is worth the extra $$.

My current truck is a 2002 Silverado 2500HD - 8.1L. With 60K, the engine still runs like it's factory fresh.

I raced mx in the late 70's, the difference in perfomance with the syn's was incredible. That made me a believer.

Since then, my all motors get lubed w/ syns. I sold a dodge truck with a 175K in 2000. The motor is all original and is now pushing 300K and still going - ALL OEM.

My choice is Mobile 1. Castrol Syn Tech is a blend with Mobile products.

Bottom Line--- use syns.

thanks guys, i always have run synthetics, and i wanted to know what you guys thought. Im 18 now and just (3 months ago) bought a 2002 1500 5.3L and it has ~66K on it. I plan on keeping that truck FOREVER. I'm going to throw in some synth in the rear end now for sure.

Thanks so much guys

My 2002 Z71 has a limited slip in the rear. Will syn work there? I thought it also required a special lube.

Royal Purple's rear diff fluid already has the friction modifier added.... It's not that expensive... I think I paid around $10 or $11 Canadian per quart.... you only need about 2 in a half to 3 quarts.... put it in... it is well worth it....

I know this is an old subject. I am planning on using Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube in my front and rear diff, cause that it what I have on the shelf. Does anyone know if it has the proper additives (like the royal purple) for the G80 rear in my '99 Z71? I used it in my '04 duramax G80 rear (totally different rear though) with no problems. But used it in my '97 formula's rear and it made a hell of a racket until I put in a container of the limited slip additive!
