what does a ATX torque converter do?!

Lags up the throttle response.

A Torque converter is the ATX's version of a Clutch.

lol...ya it's basically a clutch, transfers power from the engine to the transmission. Basically there's a couple turbines in there, one spins (engine side) and shoots tranny fluid at the other turbine (tranny side) and makes it spin...all which happens in the blink of an eye.

do any of you know where to find high performance torque converters?

Lol sory about the worthless response it was late and I thought it was funny. I think the high performace ones are refered to high stall torque converters and I think they just let you build up more than about 2500 RPMs when brake boosting (at least thats where the 4Runner maxes out).

Yes any car with an ATX has a torque converter.

just swap in a manual j/k
this company is probably one of the best suppliers of performance high stall torque converters...their prices arent too bad either but im sure you can find something alot cheaper. http://www.protorque.com/shopping/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=26&cat=Mitsubishi
what can you stall your car at now??? i would NOT recommend a high stall TC if you are basically stock because you will not see gains...it will probably just make you spin more without the proper means to get the power to the ground.

Yea high stall would be real bad for a FWD on street tires lol, it would work real well with 4WD in the 4Runner heh.

Why would you want a manual? An auto is better for drags. And with a high stall, and shift kit....

um...manual is better until your car has enough power where a person's arm cant keep up with the engine no more. plus manual is funner and for most of your purposes we want fun!!! :D

When have you seen a person shift better than a machine?
Case in point AMGs, How many manual AMGs are there?
Thought so.
And yea a manual is more fun.

When have you seen a person shift better than a machine?
um...everytime i see a stock car in manual form run .2-.5 seconds faster than the automatic version of the same car.
AMG's are well built and well-engineered transmissions...it would take thousands of dollars to get a 3000gt's auto transmission to shift as quick and precise as a AMG or a standard manual. there isnt a point of spending that kind of money until you are out of your manual's effieciency range which would be 500hp+...
case and point!!! j/k

it would have to be a pretty damn good and expensive shift kit...\
also, really you just need line pressure to make an auto tranny shift faster (i dont know if they make an ALC for the 3000gt or not}...but to make the tranny hold up to the punishment with any effieciendy of the quick, precise shifts, it would need to be rebuilt with stronger, heat treated parts...which means $$$$...

you honestly dont want to get me started on defending auto trannies. Yes, stock they are crap, but are dangerous when modified, and when they do build a performance torque converter, it does more then just raising the stall level. It allows your transmission and engine to hold more power, and it drastically reduces your drivetrainloss. I've heard in some cases it moved the drivetrain loss down to 3% since the torque converter is what eats up all the power in the auto tranny.

yeah im a strong defender of auto trannies also...beings i own one. but for purposes higher than 10.5 second drag times, a manual is all around better. most people running 10.5 seconds or higher usually keep their car street legal...i couldnt even imagine driving a strongly built auto tranny down the street. your head would slam against the seat everytime you shifted. for a street car its impractical...but a manual transmission is still driveable on the street and a good driver can hold his own on the track. im a very strong defender of auto trannies if you have the means for one. but for street use...its manual all the way for me. i have driven many built auto trannies and a few paddle shift auto's and they do shift faster that a person could even move towards the gear shifter on a manual. but not one person drives there fully built auto tranny on the street...its just now suitable for street use. yes for street use, an upgraded torque converter is fine if a person has an auto but taking farther than that gets very impractical. i have been around built auto trannies my whole life because my grandpa owns a custom race shop, mostly dedicated to dirt track cars but on rare occasion he gets a 8 second dragster through there. auto trannies are a force to be wreckon with if you have the means for one. i think you guys are just misinterpruting what i was trying to say...i dont know.
all as i was saying, IMO for street cars a manual tranny is perfect...driver involvment, quick, precise, cheap, strong, fun, etc...

i like the auto for cruising. also i can eat or talk on the phone with ease ;) some automatics even have the same performance as a manual (just saw the Pontiac GTO auto vs manual 0-60 and 1/4 times)
I have been having a slight problem with my trasmission thoug..... when i brake fairly fast the tranny thups when it goes down from 2nd to 1st any ideas? culd it be that the fluid in the tourqe converter has not cleared the converter?
also when put my car into drive when its cold it goes into gear then i have to wait for 2-4 sec and then it fully engages the gear if i do not wait for the fully engagement and i push the gas pedal the car gets a hard thump. its the same with the "from drive to reverse" i have to put it from drive to neutral and wait for a second or two and then put it in reverse or else i will get a thump...... any ideas?

well, i will agree when you mod the tranny on an auto, it is less streetable, which is why i have another car that i drive all the time. I like manuals, and are lots of fun to drive, and both types of trannies have tons of potentials and yeild different possiblities as far as set ups go. I just don't like it very much when manual owners come in and bash on the autos, cause i will defend, race, and hold my own.

yeah i totally understand...
i dont even own a manual...:) i own 2 auto 300zx's...one is an 86 and and one is a 90.
my 90 has a HKS ALC on it right now because i am borrowing my buddie's, from his TT until he gets his motor rebuilt the way he wants. i will tell you, that right now with the ALC, if i came across my same exact model 300zx except in manual...it would be a very evenly matched race and if the manual owner slipped up just once, he would see the rear end of my car. :D
i just think manuals suit a street car better than a built automatic...matter of preference i guess. but i think anyone has driven a buitl automatic will agree with me, as you have. :D

oh yea, when you start getting into some of the higher performance cars, the autos will indeed match the manuals. Last year i saw two camaro SS's, same year, same mods, one auto and one manual. They raced twice and the manual won one and the auto won one, so they're about matched.
