coolant temp sending unit..

recently my temperature gauge has been going crazy and it reads that my car is overheating.. its not a gradual change but more of a sudden change and it goes out of wack sometimes. i have never experienced this before but after talking to a pepboys employee he convinced me it was the coolant temperature sending unit.. a small plug somewhere near the power steering i think. if anybody knows if this might be true or if he was just making it up .. i havent had time to put in the new one so i dont know if its going to work...
