Shifting out of PARK sometimes a NO GO

About 1-in-5 times after starting my truck, then getting ready to pull out of its parking spot I find that my column shifter will not - shift - into DRIVE. My two workarounds:
1. tap the gas to bring up RPM a bit, back off to idle, then shift
a. works 50% of the time
2. step harder on the brake pedal, then shift
a. works 100% of the time
Have any of you observed this behavior?
Do any of you think this is analogous to a 'neutral-safety-switch' type arrangement? This isn't the end of the world. It's just annoying as hell. Especially because my 98 Ram doesn't exhibit this behavior whatsoever.

i would check the brake interlock switch, which is usually mounted in the column

Thanks for the tip superman. I'll add it to my short list of things for the dealership to give their eyeball.
