I'm hoping you maybe can help me with my "muscle car" situation? I recently acquired a 1971 Malibu convertible and I needed to ask you a few question on the subject of Malibu/Chevelle ?

# 1. Is my convertible a true Malibu, Malibu/Chevelle or did Chevelle have a convertible alone?
# 2. If I put Chevelle emblems on my car will that then make it a Chevelle clone ?
# 3. What's the differents between SS Malibu & SS Chevelle ?
# 4. What's makes the differants in a true Malibu and SS Malibu ?
# 5. Can a Malibu ever be cosidered a muscle car ?

Thank you helping me with my delema I appreciate you tacking the time out to answer my questions have a nice day .

1. chevelle and malibu are synonymous ( 1 in the same) Malibu is just a trim package. Most chevelles are optioned as malibus. in earlier years you were able to get what is known as a 300 deluxe which are post cars, and in some special circumstances these cars came from the factory with big blocks, and then there were COPO cars but I will not go into that further. In your year in question you were able to get a small block 400 which then lost the designation of malibu, and are known to most chevelle enthusiasts as "heavy chevys". and wore just a chevelle name plate. very few convertibles were produced this way. So this answers question 2 as well. your car is a chevelle with a malibu trim package.
3. I forget the years chevy did this, and there are canadian built cars that were still Malibu SS's in 65 and 66 that did not have to come with big blocks. However after 65 in USA all chevelle SS's not COPO's or dealer created cars except for the 70,71,72 454 cars and 72 350 SS cars came with a 396 in a variety of horsepowers usually 325, 350, 375 and in 66 the 360 variety. Not entirely certain of the next statement as my expert knowledge base is limited to 66 and beyond. 64 and early 65 malibus could be optioned with the SS designation ( a trim Package ) The Copo cars get a 427 from the factory, and wear no SS decals. from 65 to 68 the SS cars VIN starts with 138, I am not sure about the 300 deluxe with a BBC but I believe you could only get one of these in 69. Hopefully this answers #4. 69-72 is near impossible to tell what a car was born as from the factory SS, malibu or otherwise unless you have a matching numbers car, a protect-O-plate ( original bill of sale ) or a build sheet confirming what the car was optioned with ( Chevrolet did not keep records of this) speculation is someone has found what was left of the records after they were supposedly destroyed in a fire. We'll just keep holding our breath. That is why so many of these cars have been cloned; mostly so thieves can rob unsuspecting buyers of their money by selling fake cars.
5. You would be hard pressed to find anybody who enjoys these era cars to say anything other than all cars of that era can be considered muscle cars

Another note that might help you. Go to amazon.com and look for a book called CHEVELLE 1964-1972 by Mike Mueller, it has all the info on your car and all the other Chevelles. It's good reading and will answer all your question and a lot more. Good luck with your project.
